Ten-Goal Run Leads Jacksonville Over Sacred Heart
from press release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville
men’s lacrosse team moved above .500 for the first time in
program history today at the Ashley Sports Complex with a
convincing 17-7 victory over Sacred Heart as 14 Dolphins recorded
points.
The Dolphins (4-3) went into halftime tied at 6-6 but flipped a
switch going into the second half and unleashed a ten-goal run on
the Pioneers (1-4) to secure the win.
Freshman Ryan Serville, one of the nation’s leaders in
points, helped his cause with four goals and three assists while
sophomore Jeremy Tissenbaum and freshman Nick Scalzo each added
three goals and an assist. Senior goalie Brad Hester recorded his
fourth win of the season with seven saves in 53 minutes.
Early in the game, Timmy Katz frustrated the Dolphin defense,
scoring three times in the first 18 minutes, finishing the day with
four goals and an assist. Three other Pioneers found the back of
the net while goalie Tom Trgo played phenomenally but was unable to
handle the sheer volume of shots, 59-25.
“That was a great 60-minute performance,” said JU head
coach Matt Kerwick. “You have to tip your cap to their
goalie, he was great today and really kept them in it at the start.
We’ve been telling the guys that ground-balls are the most
important stat in the game and we did a great job with that today.
Now we’re excited to get on the road and play one of the best
teams in the country.”
Freshman Alex Everett opened up the game with a man-up goal on an
assist from Serville in the fifth minute and a Donovan Lange score
turned out to be the only two goals for JU in the first quarter as
the Pioneers were leading 3-2 at the break.
The Dolphins found themselves down, 4-2, before a Tissenbaum score
assisted by Lange drew the home team closer. JU would score three
straight goals in the middle of the second quarter on two from
Serville and another from Tissenbaum as the Dolphins took the game
into halftime, 6-6.
Scalzo’s goal just six seconds into the second half should
have been an indication of the way the game was heading as the
Serville assisted score started the 10-goal run. Seven JU players
would score during the run including three from Scalzo.
The final goal of the game was scored with just over five minutes
remaining when Matt Pramuan scored on a dish from Luke Phipps.
The Dolphins head north for their second road game of the year when
they face Bucknell on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
