Drexel Scores Final Seven to Beat St. John's
from press release
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men’s
lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals to end the game and
defeated St. John’s, 11-4. Drexel scored what proved to be
the game winner late in the second quarter and outscored the Red
Storm, 6-0, in the second half on the way to its fifth straight
win. The game was played through a driving rainstorm at Vidas
Field.
Drexel (5-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the early going. Scott
Perri got the first goal of the game just 2:15 into the contest.
Garrett McIntosh followed with his first career goal to put the
Dragons up 2-0 less than four minutes in. Dana Wilber and Robert
Church added quick goals as the Dragons looked to be in control
early. However, the Red Storm (2-2) battled back with a pair of
goals late in the period and added the first two goals of the
second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. Charlie Holenstein tied
things up with 10:20 remaining in the first half. Garrett Mitchell
set up the tying goal. Four minutes later, Drexel finally broke its
scoring drought when Adam Dennis fired a shot past St. John’s
keeper Gavin Buckley to give the Dragons the lead for good.
The second half, and especially the fourth quarter, belonged to the
Dragons. Drexel scored five times in the final 15 minutes to open
up what was a close game.
Mark Manos had another solid outing in the cage. The sophomore made
seven saves and shutout the Red Storm over the last 40 minutes of
the game. Drexel’s defense played well and held the Red Storm
without a man-up goal in five attempts. The defense has now allowed
seven or less goals in five straight games.
Eight different Dragons scored in the game. Robert Church led the
Dragons with three goals and four points. He was the only
multiple-goal scorer for the Dragons. Colin Ambler, Perri, and Nick
Trizano each had two points. Holenstein and Mitchell each had two
points for the Red Storm. Buckley finished with nine saves.
Drexel outshot St. John’s, 36-26, despite winning less than
50 percent of its face-offs for the second straight game. The
weather conditions played havoc throughout the game. The rain was
continuous throughout the contest and was accompanied by strong
winds, which had a part in each team committing 20 turnovers.
