Bucknell Edges Past Hobart 9-7
from press release
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Charlie Streep (New Canaan,
Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) scored four goals in his first game as an
attackman and Austin Winter (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes)
registered a goal and three assists to lead Bucknell to a 9-7 win
over Hobart at wet and windy Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on
Saturday. The Bison, ranked No. 20 in the USILA coaches' Poll,
improved to 3-2 with the victory in a hard-hitting affair against
their former Patriot League rivals.
Doug Shiver and Mike Lazore scored twice each and Chris Pedersen
had three assists for Hobart (1-2), which was coming off a victory
over Colgate.
In last year's meeting between the two teams in Geneva, N.Y., the
Bison managed only a pair of third-quarter goals in a 7-2 loss. On
Saturday they were again having trouble solving Hobart's big goalie
Max Silberlicht before taking over the game with a four-goal third
quarter.
Bucknell scored only twice in the first 28 minutes of the game, but
the man-up unit kick-started the offense with big goals just before
and just after the halftime break. Trailing 3-2 but up a man,
Winter executed a fake flip play behind the net and found a wide
open Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) cutting to the net
with 1:39 remaining in the half. That tied the game at 3-apiece,
then the Bison took their first lead of the day 4:15 into the third
quarter when Winter fed Streep for another EMO tally.
Just 2:35 later, Billy Eisenreich (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) threaded
a beautiful pass through traffic to Winter on the doorstep to make
it 5-3. Lazore scored less than a minute later for Hobart, but
back-to-back goals by Streep and Chris Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./The
Lovett School) made it 7-4 after three periods.
The two teams alternated goals in the fourth quarter. Three times
Hobart cut its deficit down to two goals, but twice the Bison
answered. Tyler Simmons' first career goal in the opening minute of
the final period pulled the Statesmen within 7-5, but with 9:39
left Streep peeled away from a defender on the right side and
whipped a rocket past Silberlicht for his fourth goal of the
day.
With just over seven minutes remaining the Bison defense came up
with a turnover, but then a bad cross-field pass went right to
Kevin Curtin in front, and he scored before goalie Kyle Feeney
(Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) could scramble back into his
crease.
With 5:48 left a Hobart defenseman was sent off on a slashing call,
and Danylyshyn scored off a Winter feed for Bucknell's third
extra-man goal of the day. Then with 4:39 to play, Hobart's
Pedersen was flagged for two separate penalties on one sequence.
That gave the Bison two full minutes of 6-on-5 play, and they
melted it all off the clock.
The game got a bit sloppy in the final two minutes with the ball
and bodies rolling all over the ground. Shiver scored with 1:03
left to bring Hobart within 9-7 and the Statesmen won the faceoff,
but Feeney made a save on Curtin's outside shot and then another on
Tyler Cassell in the final seconds.
Feeney finished with 11 saves, four coming in the fourth quarter,
while Silberlicht had 13 for Hobart. The Bison outshot the
Statesmen 33-27, including 11-3 in a big third quarter in which
Bucknell outscored Hobart 4-1.
Bucknell's EMO team went 3-for-4, and the man-down unit killed off
both of Hobart's EMO opportunities. Defensively, the Bison forced
Hobart into 22 turnovers, with Alex Lyons (Owings Mills, Md./Boys'
Latin) leading the way with five takeaways.
Hobart faceoff man Bobby Dattilo had a big day, winning 14 of 20
with six ground balls.
The Bison played without senior attackman Tim Brandau (Owings
Mills, Md./McDonogh), who was injured at the end of last week's
game against Navy. In his place, Streep moved from midfield to
attack and produced a season-high four goals, doubling his season
total coming in. Sophomore Nick Gantsoudes (Redding, Conn./Avon Old
Farms) joined the first midfield line and scored his first goal of
the year in the first quarter.
Bucknell next heads to Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday night to
face Jacksonville in a neutral-site game. That game will start at 7
p.m. at Forsyth Country Day School. The Bison then return home next
Saturday against Lafayette, which is nationally ranked for the
first time and is coming off a 15-8 rout of Navy.
