Binghamton Beats Marist to Snap Streak
from press release
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Senior attack Jeff Rurey
and freshman attack Matt Springer each scored a game-high four
goals and senior midfielder Steve Carlson added three goals,
leading Binghamton (2-4) to a 15-9 win at Marist (3-1) on Saturday
afternoon. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the
Bearcats.
The 15 goals is the highest recorded by Binghamton since its 16-8
win at Hartford on April 1, 2006. Furthermore, Saturday's game
against the Red Foxes marked the first time in school history that
three Bearcat players recorded hat tricks in the same game.
Rurey's four goals and six points (he also had a pair of assists)
are both career highs. Springer, meanwhile, has 11 goals in his
last three games and leads Binghamton with 17 goals so far this
season. Carlson now has four career hat tricks.
In the opening 15 minutes, Rurey scored three times as the Bearcats
jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Springer and Carlson each added a goal
during that span. Rurey and senior midfielder Andy Cook (who
finished with two goals and an assist) each scored in the second
quarter as the Bearcats took an 8-5 lead at the half.
Springer led the Bearcat attack in the third quarter with two
goals. With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, the score was
12-5.
Carlson and Springer scored their final goals eight seconds apart
in the fourth quarter, increasing the lead to 14-5 with nine
minutes to go. Sophomore defender Ben Waldron added the Bearcats'
final tally three minutes later.
Sophomore faceoff specialist Jeff Donigan won 24 of the 27
faceoffs. In the process, he broked the school record of 19 faceoff
wins, set by J.P. Wioncek against Sacred Heart on March 18, 2006.
In addition, Donigan's .889 faceoff win percentage broke Wioncek's
.863 mark (which he also set in the game against Sacred Heart four
years ago).
