Towson Looking for First Win Against Terps
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Hoping to earn its first win of
the season, the Towson University men's lacrosse team will travel
to the University of Maryland on Saturday morning to face the
fifth-ranked Terrapins at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium at 11
a.m.
The game will be broadcast live on WMAR-TV in Baltimore and
nationally on ESPNU with Scott Garceau and Mark Dixon calling the
action. In addition, the game will air on WTMD-FM 89.7 with Spiro
Morekas, '83 and Greg LaCour, '81 providing the play-by-play.
Saturday's game will mark the 32nd all-time meeting between the
in-state rivals in a series that Maryland has dominated. The
Terrapins, who lead the series by a 26-5 margin, have won eight
straight over the Tigers, dating back to the 2002 season. The
Tigers' last victory over the Terrapins came in the 2001 NCAA
quarter-finals at Byrd Stadium, a 12-11 decision.
The Tigers will be facing their third straight nationally-ranked
opponent when they visit Maryland on Saturday morning. Now 0-2 on
the season, the Tigers dropped a 13-9 verdict against 15th-ranked
Bucknell in the season opener two weeks ago before a 14-11 setback
against 17th-ranked Stony Brook last Saturday at LaValle
Stadium.
Senior midfielder Will Harrington (Friends School/Baltimore, Md.)
led the Tigers against the Seawolves on Saturday afternoon. The
Tigers' leading scorer with six goals and one assist, he set a
career high by scoring five goals against Stony Brook.
Meanwhile, midfielder Christian Pastirik (St. Mary's
H.S./Annapolis, Md.) also had a career day against the Seawolves,
scoring two goals with a career-high four assists. Prior to the
game against Stony Brook, the Cornell transfer had tallied just
seven points in his college career.
Currently 3-0 on the season, the fifth-ranked Terrapins are coming
off an 11-10 overtime victory against Duke last Saturday in the
Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium. Junior
attackman Grant Catalino (Webster Schroeder H.S./Webster, N.Y.)
scored a career-high five goals against the Blue Devils on Saturday
and leads the Terrapins with eight goals and seven assists.
Senior goalkeeper Brian Phipps (Severn H.S./Annapolis, Md.) has
played well for the Terrapins after recovering from a knee injury
at the end of last year. He has stopped 52.4 per cent of the shots
he has faced while allowing 9.91 goals per game. He made 15 saves
in the victory over Duke last Saturday, including five in the first
quarter.
Led by four goals and an assist from Catalino, the Terrapins edged
the Tigers by a 9-7 margin in last year's meeting at Johnny
Unitas® Stadium. The Tigers were led by Bill McCutcheon, who
scored one goal with three assists.
After Saturday's game, the Tigers will begin a quick two-game
homestand by hosting the United States Naval Academy at Unitas
Stadium on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
