Big 2nd Quarter Lifts Big Green Over Wagner
from press release
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team
scored 10 goals in the second quarter and never looked back as the
Big Green cruised to an 18-9 victory over Wagner on Thursday
afternoon.
Dartmouth (2-1) got an amazing game from junior Joshua Etzion (Boca
Raton, Fla.). He played the first half only and registered a
career-high nine points on five goals and four assists. It was the
most points scored by a Big Green player since teammate Ari Sussman
(New Haven, Conn) tallied eight back in 2007. Sussman had an
impressive game as well with three goals and two assists for five
points.
Sophomores Colin Delaney (Darien, Conn.) and Kip Dooley
(Minneapolis, Minn.) notched a pair goals and an assist apiece,
while rookie Nikki Dysenchuk netted two goals. Dartmouth finished
the day with nine different goals scorers. Senior Mike Novosel
(Somers, N.Y.) got the start and made two saves in the win. Each
netminder earned time in front of the cage as sophomore Fergus
Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) posted a team-high four stops and
freshmen Bernie Susskind (Highland Beach, Calif.) and Ryan
Alexander (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) saw action with
Susskind making a pair of saves.
Wagner (0-4) had its largest goal output of the season with nine.
The previous high was four which came in a couple of games. Will
Macumber led the way with three goals and Cody Isdaner netted two
scores and added an assist for three points. Brian Faughnan also
tallied a pair of
goals for the Seahawks. Michael Gutkin saw all 60 minutes in the
cage and made 12 saves in the defeat.
Dartmouth got the scoring going four minutes into the contest as
Dooley added his first of the season, coming from Etzion for one of
his three helpers on the day. Dysenchuk and Sussman increased the
lead to 3-0 with 3:37 remaining in the opening quarter. Macumber
cut the lead down to 3-1 for Wagner with 1:30 left, but Etzion
posted his third point of the frame with his fourth goal of the
season with 13 seconds remaining to make it 4-1.
The second quarter belonged to the Big Green as Dartmouth outscored
Seahawks 10-3, led by Etzion and Sussman, who lit it up for the Big
Green. The two factored in seven of the ten goals with Etzion
scoring four times, including three consecutive tallies late in the
second. Two of the three goals by Etzion came off the stick of
Sussman as he put up two assists and also added a pair of scores
for four points in the quarter. Dysenchuk, Dooley, freshman Chris
Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) and senior captain Christopher Root
(Houston, Texas) also scored in the frame for the Big Green.
Faughnan, Macumber and Mike Hurley posted the goals for the
Seahawks with Faughnan's coming on a man-up situation to stop a
six-goal streak for Dartmouth. The Big Green took a commanding 14-4
lead into the locker room at the half.
Senior Andrew Peisch (Wellesley, Mass.) got Dartmouth rolling again
in the second half with his first of the season and second of his
career, coming just 15 seconds in the third quarter. Junior Jack
Steele (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Delaney helped build the lead up to
17-4 after posting back-to-back goals five minutes apart. Macumber
netted the fifth goal for the Seahawks to end the quarter to make
it 17-5 with one frame remaining.
The final frame was all Wagner as the Seahawks outscored the Big
Green 4-1. Delaney added the lone goal for Dartmouth. Isdaner
posted a pair goals for Wagner, while Sean Travis and Faughnan
recorded the others to close the scoring at 18-9.
Surprisingly the Big Green only outshot Wagner by five shots with a
43-38 shot advantage. The Seahawks scored on two of their nine
man-up opportunities and Dartmouth went 1-for-5 with extra
attacker.
The Big Green will be back in action on March 19 as Dartmouth
travels to No. 3 North Carolina for a 7 p.m. start.
