Robert Morris Beats Ohio State, Improves to 4-0
from press release
In the first quarter, the Robert Morris University Colonials ran
past the Ohio State Buckeyes by scoring the first five goals of the
contest. RMU never relinquished that lead throughout the remainder
of play, leading them to a 12-7 triumph.
With the win the Colonials remain undefeated with a 4-0 record,
while the Buckeyes drop to 3-2.
Junior Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve
Academy) led the contest with three goals and two assists for five
points, while junior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. /
Western Reserve Academy) added three goals in the win. Junior
Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) led the contest with
three helpers and added one goal for a four-point performance and
five other Colonials added at least one goal. Sophomore Dillon Pope
(Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) recorded his second straight win
with 11 saves and tied for first on the team with four ground
balls.
The Colonials dominated the start of play scoring five goals in
the first eight minutes, with two coming from Moore, to gain a five
goal lead. Ohio State was finally able to get on the scoreboard
with 5:54 remaining on the clock with a goal by Dominique Alexander
off an assist by James Green. The Buckeyes scored one more time at
the 13:06 mark to set the score at 5-2 heading into the second
quarter.
The Colonials and the Buckeyes battled through over three minutes
in the second quarter before a goal was scored, but OSU's Matt
Kawamoto broke the silence with a score at 3:29. Smith answered
back for RMU and picked up a pass from Mike Meagher (St. Louis, Mo.
/ St. Louis University HS) and got the ball past OSU goalie Brandon
Freeman to put RMU up 6-3. Alexander scored his second of the day
for Ohio State at 5:59, but goals by Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif.
/ Bellarmine Prep) and Tao-Brambleby gave RMU and 8-4 advantage
after the first half.
RMU picked up where they left off with Taylor Caparosa (Annapolis,
Md. / Annapolis) capturing a goal off a Moore assist at 3:13. For
the next six minutes neither team's defense would let a goal in,
but finally with 5:34 left to play OSU's James Green ran in for a
goal to cut their five-goal deficit to four. Tao-Brambleby scored
his second goal of the contest with 2:10 left on the clock to take
back the five goal lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Buckeyes scored the first two goals on
unassisted plays, with one of them being made on with the extra man
advantage. However, the Colonials scored two goals of their own
before the clock winded down to zero to capture the 12-7
victory.
Robert Morris tallied 33 ground balls to OSU's 24 and went 1-for-3
on man-up opportunities, while OSU went 1-for-1. Ohio State
dominated the face-off circle 18 to five, but RMU outshot the
Buckeyes 38 to 29.
The Colonials return to action Saturday, March 13 to take on
Detroit Mercy at 1:00 p.m.
