Efficient Jays Shoot over 50 Percent to Beat UMBC

BALTIMORE -- Junior midfielder Bobby Stockton
(Ponte Vedra, Fla.) tied his career high with three goals and four
points and UMBC tied its season high with 10 goals, but the
Retrievers fell to the seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays,
16-10, before 1,129 fans at Homewood Field.
Junior midfielder Jamie Kimbles (Centreville,Md./Queen
Anne’s) and sophomore attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y.)
scored two goals each for UMBC. Four Blue Jays scored three goals
each, but senior attackman Steven Boyle led all scorers with three
goals and four assists.
UMBC sophomore Brian McCullough (Garden City, N.Y.) got his first
career start in the UMBC cage, facing collegiate lacrosse’s
most storied programs. He made eight saves, the most for a
Retriever netminder this season.
The Retrievers outshot JHU, 35-31, corralled more ground balls
(32-28) and won one more face-offs (14-13). But the Blue Jays were
extremely efficient, scoring 16 times on 31 shots and scoring on
five of six man-up chances.
Trailing 10-6 early in the third quarter, UMBC went on a 3-0 run to
trim the deficit to 10-9 on goals by sophomore attackman Shane
Ryznar (Crofton, Md./DeMatha), Stockton and Grimm in a four-minute
span. Grimm’s score came on a one-on-one play with the keeper
after a caused turnover and feed from senior long stick midfielder
Mike Camardo (Altamont, N.Y.) with 7:13 to play in the third
quarter.
But UMBC lost the ensuing face-off and Hopkins’ Zach Palmer
would eventually score at the 4:27 mark to start a 5-0 surge to put
the Blue Jays in command. Palmer ended the run at the 8:27 mark of
the fourth quarter to give JHU a 15-9 lead.
UMBC also scored 10 goals in the opening 11-10 triple overtime loss
to Delaware on Feb. 20.
UMBC outshot the hosts, 12-5, in the first quarter, but the Blue
Jays scored on four of five attempts. The Retrievers’
first two goals were scored on man-up situations as Stockton and
Latham scored to even the score at 1-1 and 2-2. The Blue Jays held
a 4-3 lead after one quarter and extended it to 7-4 midway through
the second half, but the Retrievers scored back-to-back goals by
Stockton and Kimbles to slice the deficit to 7-6 at the 1:51 mark.
Hopkins closed the half on a rebound goal by Boyle with 1:03
remaining and headed to the locker room with an 8-6 advantage.
Senior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa.) extended his scoring
streak to 23 with a goal and an assist in the contest.
Camardo, sixth in the nation with 2.67 caused turnovers per game,
led all players with five in the game.
UMBC faces its third consecutive top ten opponent when they travel
to Princeton to take on the fifth-ranked Tigers on Saturday, March
13.
