ECAC Office Releases Its Weekly Awards

Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Collin Finnerty, Loyola
Senior, Attack, Garden City, N.Y.
Finnerty scored eight goals in a pair of games last week, helping the Greyhounds win their second ECAC Lacrosse League game of the season, 14-8, at Bellarmine. Against the Knights, Finnerty scored a career-high five goals, eclipsing the four goals he scored on three different occasions last season. On Saturday against No. 3 Notre Dame, Finnerty scored three second-half goals, tying for game-high honors. Finnerty’s eight goals came on just 14 shots, and one was an EMO tally against Bellarmine.

Mario Ventiquattro, Ohio State
Senior, Attack, Carthage, N.Y.
Ventiquattro had a career-high four goals in the Buckeyes’ overtime win against Penn State Saturday. He scored his first two goals less than a minute apart in the first quarter to put the Buckeyes ahead after Penn State scored the first goal of the game. He completed the hat trick in the second quarter with a man-up goal to extend the lead to 5-3. His final goal was scored man-up 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, extending the Buckeye lead to 9-7. His four goals came on five shots. The four goals were a career high after four career hat tricks (last Feb. 21, 2009 vs. Bucknell). Ventiquattro, who has six goals, three assists and nine points on the year while starting all four games, now has 58 goals, 21 assists and 79 points as a Buckeye.

Defensive Player of the Week
Max Silberlicht, Hobart
Senior, Goalkeeper, New Hartford, N.Y.
Silberlicht earned his first win of the season with a 13-save performance at Colgate. He turned back four of the five shots he faced in the first quarter, allowing the Statesmen to build a five-goal lead through the first 15 minutes. Silberlicht stopped four of the six shots he saw in the third quarter and saved 3-of-4 even strength shots in the third. Through two games, he has a .578 save percentage and a 9.50 GAA.

CO-Rookies of the Week
Sam Snow, Fairfield
Freshman, Attack, Bainbridge, Wash.
Snow paced the Stags offense once again with a career-best four goals. He scored the team’s first two goals, the only tallies of the first-half. Snow then scored back-to-back goals, 12 seconds apart, in the fourth quarter, giving the Stags a 6-5 lead. Snow scored his four goals on seven shots.

Logan Schuss, Ohio State
Freshman, Attack, Delta, British Columbia
Schuss had a career-best four assists and scored the game-winning goal in overtime vs. Penn State. He set up the go-ahead goal in the first quarter that gave Ohio State its first lead of the day and had the assist on back-to-back goals in the second quarter. His assist with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter helped put the Buckeyes ahead, 10-7. His game-winning goal came 1:10 into the first overtime. Schuss has a team-best eight assists and 15 points this year and shares the goal-scoring lead with seven.

TEAM NOTES
Air Force...Air Force hosts service academy rival Army this weekend, March 13. It will mark the first time in the 16-year series between the two teams that the Falcons have hosted the Black Knights in lacrosse action... Junior midfielder Zack Carroll, who scored six goals in a pair of games against Lehigh and Penn, was the lone Falcon named to the Pioneer Face-off Classic all-tournament team... Carroll, who entered this season with one career point, currently leads Air Force with 12 points through three games in 2010... Goalkeeper Brian Wilson matched a career-high with 12 saves against Lehigh, and bested that mark with 13 saves versus Penn... Sophomore Adam Paranka registered a career-high four goals and five points against Lehigh, playing in front of his hometown crowd...Senior captain Ridge Flick also matched career highs against Lehigh, with four assists and five points... Junior long-stick midfielder Bryan Gilbreath, who picked up a career-best nine ground balls against Penn, is averaging 8.33 ground balls per game.

Bellarmine...On Wednesday, March 3, the Bellarmine lacrosse team faced off against their second top 10 team of the season, No. 10 Loyola Maryland Greyhounds, and fell, 14-8… This game was the ECAC debut for Bellarmine... The Knights moved to 0-2 on the season at home, competing against two top 10 teams, University of Maryland and Loyola University Maryland… Bellarmine is now 3-2 overall… The Knights were led by senior Sean Doyle with four goals and seven shots… Sophomore Carson Craig picked up six ground balls… Bellarmine started off with the lead at the end of the first quarter, and then was tied with the Greyhounds shortly into the second period… Bellarmine’s lead diminished during the four goal run by the Greyhounds, and the Knights could not keep up against Loyola’s five goals in the third period and six goals in the fourth… Bellarmine goal keepers Dillon Ward and Scott Bowles saved a combined 11 shots… The Knights play their next game at home, Wednesday, March 10, at 3:30, taking on Bryant University… The following Saturday, March 13, Bellarmine travels to West Hartford, Conn. for a match-up against Hartford University… Jack McGetrick, who is in his sixth season as head coach of the Knights, returns to Hartford to face the team he formerly coached for 11 years with a record of 87-74, and where he picked up the league’s Coach of the Year Award in 2003.

Denver...The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team (2-3) hosted the DU Face-Off Classic at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium over the weekend, playing host to Penn, Lehigh and Air Force... The Pioneers started the weekend dropping an 11-7 decision to Penn before outlasting Lehigh, 8-7, in the final game of the Classic... Sophomore Alex Demopoulos led the Pioneers in points, finishing with six on three goals and three assists to go along with five ground balls and causing two turnovers...Freshman Cameron Flint led the goal scoring efforts, finishing with four goals on six shots... In his first two games back from injury, freshman Chase Carraro won 20-of-40 face-offs and secured 12 ground balls while causing one turnover... Defensively, senior Dillon Roy turned in an impressive performance causing five turnovers and scooping up six ground balls... As a team, Denver averaged 7.5 goals per game and held the advantage over its opponents in ground balls, 52-38.

Fairfield…Fairfield allowed three Villanova goals in the final 6:25, falling 8-6 to the Wildcats... Sam Snow paced the offense, with four tallies on only seven shots… Snow, a rookie, now leads Fairfield in goals with six, and total points with eight… Joe Marra made nine saves in net and has a .567 save percentage and a GAA of 8.67, playing all 180 minutes in net for the Stags… Fairfield denied Villanova in 2-3 man-up chances, denying 10-14 for the year… Fairfield won 5-6 fourth-quarter face-offs on Saturday… The Stags will play Notre Dame this weekend in Houston, Texas, the team’s first-ever game in that state… Fairfield is 2-4 against the Irish, with the last meeting coming in 2005, a 12-11 victory that helped the Stags to the GWLL title and its second NCAA Tournament appearance.

Hobart...Hobart defeated Colgate, 12-9, in its only game last week... The Statesmen have now won 24 in a row against the Raiders... Attackmen Kevin Curtin and Chris Pedersen led the offense with four points apiece, while fellow attackman Doug Shiver added a hat trick... At the faceoff X, sophomore Bobby Datillo won 17-of-25 and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls. Through two games, he’s won 61.4 percent of his restarts... In goal, senior Max Silberlicht earned his first win of the season with a 13-save performance against the Raiders... Senior midfielder Tyler Cassell and Silberlicht were named to the 2010 Tewaaraton Watch List late last week. The Hobart duo are among 64 players identified by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance as hopefuls for the men’s 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy, presented to the lacrosse player of the year. They represent half of the four ECAC Lacrosse League players on the list... Hobart will be back in action on March 13, when the Statesmen visit 13th-ranked Bucknell... Hobart leads the all-time series with the Bison 17-5, including a 7-2 win in Geneva last season... Bucknell will be the second ranked opponent the Statesmen have faced this season, after opening the year against No. 7 Cornell.

Loyola...Loyola moved to 3-1 overall in 2010 and 2-0 in ECAC action after defeating Bellarmine, 14-8, last week before falling to No. 3 Notre Dame, 11-9, in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic... Collin Finnerty scored eight goals over the two games, recording a career-high five goals against the Knights and three more versus the Fighting Irish... Eric Lusby had back-to-back three-goal games, matching his career-high for consecutive contests... Matt Langan had four assists and a goal in two games, while Taylor Ebsary had a goal and two assists... After allowing an extra-man goal in their first two games of the season, the Greyhounds denied both Bellarmine and Notre Dame on man-up opportunities last week... The Knights were 0-of-1, while Notre Dame was 0-of-6 on Loyola penalties... The Greyhounds also killed off two Notre Dame extra-man chances when the Greyhounds were two men down... This week, the Greyhounds open the new, state-of-the-art Ridley Athletic Complex when they host Duke at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. The complex will be the new home for Loyola men’s and women’s lacrosse and soccer and provides a fantastic venue for 6,000 fans to watch the Greyhounds in action.

Ohio State...Ohio State will play at Robert Morris on Tuesday before hosting Albany in the first meeting between the schools. Ohio State is 5-0 all-time vs. Robert Morris, with the teams meeting each of the last five years. Ohio Sate posted a 19-13 win March 11, 2009, in Columbus in the last meeting and won, 12-5, on March 15, 2008, in the last meeting on the road... The Buckeyes won the unofficial “Big Ten Championship” with an 11-10 overtime victory against Penn State last Saturday... Freshman Logan Schuss had the overtime winner and had four assists and five points in the game... Senior Mario Ventiquattro had a career-high four goals... Schuss has a team-best eight assists and 15 points this year. He shares the team goal-scoring lead with classmate Jeff Tundo and senior James Green with seven each and senior Mario Ventiquattro is third with six... Tundo is second with 10 points, followed by Ventiquattro with nine... Schuss has 11 points in his last two games combined (4g, 7a). He has at least one point in each game this year... Ventiquattro’s four goals were a career high after four career hat tricks (last Feb. 21, 2009 vs. Bucknell)... Senior Scott Foreman and junior Matt Kawamoto have started the last 37 and 17 games, respectively. Brandon Freeman has started the last 20 games in goal for the Buckeyes... Schuss, Jeff Tundo and Dominque Alexander have started all three games this season, joined by Ventiquattro... Senior goalie Brandon Freeman had his third game with 10 or more saves this season with 12 stops vs. Penn State.

Quinnipiac…The Bobcats won a pair of games this week, defeating Wagner, 20-3, on Thursday, before going on the road to defeat Detroit-Mercy, 13-8, on Sunday... Christian Haggerty had a pair of three-goal, one-assist performances on the week, while Jack Oppenheimer (5 G, 1 A) and Peter McNichols (4 G, 2 A) contributed six points each... Alex DeAlmeida had a team-best three assists to go along with two goals on the week. .. Zach Pall was exceptional on face-offs this week, winning 19-of-25, to go along with two goals and an assist... Goalie Kevin Benzing earned the win in both games, making eight saves in each game and compiling a combined 6.12 goals-against average and .640 save percentage... The Bobcats return to action Saturday, when they play host to Providence.
