Unbeaten Robert Morris Beats VMI
from press release
LEXINGTON, Va. - The Robert Morris University
Colonials extended their winning streak to three games with a
commanding 19-8 victory over the VMU Keydets on Saturday afternoon
at Foster Stadium. With the win the Colonials maintain their
perfect record at 3-0, while the Keydets drop to 2-3.
Sophomore Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario / Saltfleet) tied a
career-high with five goals, while seven other Colonials tallied
multiple points in the victor. Junior Trevor Moore (Port Coquitlam,
B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) paced RMU with four assists and
added one goal for a five-point game, junior Corbyn Tao-Brambleby
(Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) finished with three
goals and junior Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster)
added two goals.
VMI started off the contest with the first score when Drew Leonard
found the back of the net at 1:33. However, that would mark the
only time the Keydets led the contest throughout the rest of the
game and it lasted for less than one minute. Junior Taylor Caparosa
(Annapolis, Md. / Annapolis) matched that goal at 2:10 on an
unassisted play, which was followed by three more Colonial goals
within the next five minutes to give them a 4-1 lead.
With 1:29 left in the quarter Colin Bosse closed the gap to two
goals, but Matisz captured his second goal of the contest 16
seconds later to recapture the three goal cushion heading into the
second quarter.
Matisz came out in the second quarter and continued where he left
off by scoring the first goal of the second frame just 18 seconds
in. VMI's Brett Leonard responded with a goal off an assist from
Tim Moran, but just like the first quarter the Colonials stormed
back with three goals scored by James Dougherty (Finksburg, Md. /
Westminster), Casey Abbott (San Jose, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep.)
and Moore.
The Keydets were able to squeeze in a goal at the 7:35 mark, but
Robert Morris overwhelmed VMI with five more goals before the
second quarter to grab a solid 14-4 advantage heading into the
second half.
The third quarter saw the least amount of action with the Keydets
registering two goals to the Colonials' one, which marked the only
frame the Colonials were outscored. Tao-Brambleby started things
off with a goal at the 54 second mark and VMU's Colin Bosse scored
back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 15-6.
In the fourth quarter, Robert Morris added four more goals to its
collection, while the Keydets were able to get through the Colonial
defense just two times to finalize the score with a 19-8 win for
RMU.
VMI's Kelly McMinn finished the contest with 15 saves, while
sophomore Dillon Pope (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) captured a
career-high 11 saves and Charles Ruppert (Long Island, N.Y. /
Massapequa) chipped in one.
The Colonials and the Keydets matched each other with 29 ground
balls apiece and Robert Morris was successful on all three
extra-man opportunities, while holding VMI scoreless on seven
chances.
