Quick Start Leads Manhattan Past Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart
University men’s lacrosse team fell to Manhattan College,
12-9, at Campus Field Saturday afternoon. The win is the first of
the year for the Jaspers who sit at 1-2, while the Pioneers dropped
to 1-3 on the season.
Manhattan opened with the first six scores of the contest, three by
senior attack James Synowiez, before senior attack Timmy Katz
(Freeport, NY) netted the first goal of the game for SHU. Trailing
7-1 the Pioneer offense was at its best as sophomore Matt Ferrino
(Orchard Park, NY) scored a pair of man-up goals and senior Jon
Flood (Hauppauge, NY) added a score off his own all in a one minute
stand. Junior Justin Jensen scored his second of three goals with
just over a minute to play in the first half to give the Jaspers an
8-4 advantage at the break.
In the third quarter, Jensen and senior Joe Variano both scored for
Manhattan. The Pioneers scored five of the last seven goals, but it
wasn’t enough. Katz finished with a pair of goals and
classmate Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) notched a goal and an
assist.
Jensen scored three times and collected an assists for Manhattan.
Variano and Synowiez also recorded a hat trick and added an assist
apiece.
Junior Jon Fiorillo made 17 saves to record the win for the
Jaspers. Senior Tom Trgo (N. Merrick, NY) started in the cage for
SHU and made eight saves and giving up six goals, taking the loss.
Trgo was replaced by junior Zach Frank (Islip Terrace, NY) in the
second quarter. Frank also stopped six shots, but allowed four
goals.
