Penn Beats Denver for Murphy's First Win
from press release
DENVER - The Penn men's lacrosse team defeated
host Denver, 11-7, to cap off the first day of the Pioneers' DU
Face-Off Classic. The win was Penn's first under head coach Mike
Murphy.
The Quakers scored three straight goals bridging the first and
second quarters, putting them up 4-2. They never trailed again.
Al Kohart had five goals and an assist to lead Penn, while Rob
McMullen scored twice. Corey Winkoff had a goal and two
assists.
Denver opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the game when Andrew
Lay scored off a Todd Baxter feed. Penn needed a little more than
two minutes to tie it, as McMullen scored off a pass from Dan
Savage. More than nine minutes went by before DU's Alex Demopoulos
put the Pioneers back up with an unassisted goal. However, Penn got
unassisted tallies from Jacob Bock and Kohart in the final two
minutes of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead. Kohart then opened up
the second-quarter scoring off a John Conneely feed to make the
score 4-2.
DU's Cameron Flint and Kohart matched goals midway through the
second, before Lay finished a Charley Dickenson feed. More than two
minutes went by before Rob Fitzpatrick notched an unassisted goal,
and then Winkoff finished a Kohart feed to put the Quakers up 7-4
at the half.
Baxter scored his first of the day to bring Denver within two, but
seven minutes after that goal Conneely notched his first. Four
minutes after that, Kohart finished a Winkoff feed and it was 9-5
after three quarters.
In the fourth, Mark Matthews scored to make it 9-6, but nearly
seven minutes went by and the Pioneers were unable to score again.
McMullen ended the goalless streak off a Savage feed, and then
almost two minutes later Kohart notched his fifth to put the
Quakers up, 11-6. Matthews closed out the scoring off a Demopoulos
feed.
Chris Casey and Joe Hegener split time in goal, with Casey making
four saves and Hegener three. Both players gave up five goals. Penn
outshot Denver, 33-28, and won 11 faceoffs to the Pioneers' 10.
Penn is back in action tomorrow at the Face-Off Classic, taking on
Air Force at 11 a.m. (1 p.m. Eastern). The Falcons lost to Lehigh,
14-13, in Saturday's first game. Denver and Lehigh will conclude
