McBride Leads Stony Brook Over Towson
from press release
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Junior Jordan McBride
(New Westminster, British Columbia) had a game-high six goals,
three in a decisive 6-1 second quarter, to lead the #20/17 Stony
Brook men’s lacrosse team to a 14-11 win over Towson in
non-conference action at LaValle Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) added
three goals and two assists for the Seawolves, who faced the Tigers
for the first time in school history. Will Harrington had a
career-high five goals for Towson (0-2).
“It feels good to be back in the win column,” head
coach Rick Sowell said. “Towson’s a good team that
plays a tough schedule and this is one of our better wins in four
years. It’s good to get back on track after a loss. This is a
very good win for our team.”
McBride, who was held scoreless against Virginia last week, but
tallied his 100th career goal on Saturday, scored two goals a
minute apart in the first half. Towson answered with goals just 12
seconds apart, but Crowley’s man-up tally gave the Seawolves
a one-goal lead.
After a 3-3 first quarter, Stony Brook opened up a six-goal lead.
Four different players scored for the Seawolves, aided by three
from McBride, who’s now scored four or more goals for the
12th time in his illustrious career. Harrington scored just 15
seconds before halftime to make it a 9-4 lead after 30 minutes.
Junior Timmy Trenkle’s (Commack, N.Y.) first goal of the
season made it 10-4 just 54 seconds into the second half. Senior
Tom Compitello’s (Hauppauge, N.Y.) goal at 1:26 capped the
third quarter scoring as Stony Brook and Towson combined for just
four third-period goals.
Crowley’s ninth of the season gave the Seawolves’ their
third six-goal advantage of the game, but Towson rallied, scoring
four unanswered goals, making it a two-goal game, 12-10. Junior
Adam Rand (Niantic, Conn.), who won 16-of-27 faceoffs, keyed the
next two Seawolves’ goals. "Adam was crucial for us late in
the game," Sowell said. "He made some in-game adjustments and
picked up some big ones late."
After Rand won the ensuing faceoff, the McBride-Crowley duo struck
again as Crowley found McBride for his team-leading 14th goal.
Sophomore Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) capped Stony
Brook’s scoring with an unassisted goal at 2:23 of the fourth
quarter.
Senior Steven Waldeck (Levittown, N.Y.), who scored his second goal
of the season, led the team with seven ground balls and three
caused turnovers. Rand tallied six ground balls and senior Chris
Gignilliat (Cicero, N.Y.) added four ground balls. Senior Charlie
Paar (Huntington, N.Y.) made eight saves to pick up his second
victory of the year.
Stony Brook takes on its second straight CAA opponent as it travels
to face Delaware next Saturday at 1 pm.
