Hurley's OT Tally Lifts No. 8 Cornell Over Army
from press release
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Ryan Hurley became the
fifth player in school history to score 100 career goals, but it
was his 102nd that gave head coach Jeff Tambroni his 100th coaching
victory with an overtime game-winner, keeping the Big Red unbeaten
with a 12-11 overtime victory over Amry on Saturday afternoon at
Schoellkopf Field. The Big Red improved to 3-0 with the win, while
the Black Knights fell to 1-3.
Hurley scored four goals, including the 100th of his career, but it
was his fourth of the day coming in transition with 41 seconds left
in the first sudden death overtime that lifted the Big Red to its
third straight win to open the year.
In an evenly contested game throughout, it was ultimately a 5-0 run
stretching the third into the fourth quarter and Cornell's dominant
20-of-28 day in face-offs that was the difference.
Hurley added an assist to his four goals, while Rob Pannell had two
goals and an assist in the victory. Freshman Ross Gillum scored
twice and Chris Rithcie had a goal and an assist to lead the Big
Red offense. Max Feely was credited with four caused turnovers and
five ground balls defensively, with Austin Boykin winning 19-of-23
face-offs in a brilliant performance at the "x".
Garrett Thul had four goals and an assist to lead Army, while Tyler
Seymour had a goal and three assists. Both Jeremy Boltus and Tyler
Oates were credited with two goals and an assist. Leading the
ground ball charge for the Black Knights was goalkeeper Tom Palesky
with six to go along with his six saves.
With the score tied at 2-2 and less than two minutes on the clock
in the first, Pannell beat his defender and used one fake to take
the lead at 3-2, then scored again in transition after a turnover
by Army, putting the home team up 4-2 with five seconds left.
Hurley had gotten the Big Red off to a good start with the team's
first two scores in less than seven minutes, becoming the fifth
player in school history to reach 100 career goals.
Hurley broke a 5-5 deadlock with four minutes to play in the
second, dodging a defender and putting a shot over Paleski's
shoulder for his third game of the day. Army was able to tie it up
with a man-up goal with 1:42 left.
Trailing 8-6, Cornell went on a 5-0 run to seemingly take control.
Hurley fed Lau with 7:04 to get the team going, while was followed
up quickly by a Gillum score to knot the game at 8-8. When Langton
scored on the man advantage with 4:19 left, Cornell took a lead it
would never relinquish. Roy Lang gave the Big Red its biggest lead
at 11-8 with 10:56, but Army wouldn't go away. A 3-0 run tied the
score, with Tyler Oates getting the equalizer with 3:52 left. Army
took over after a failure to advance call on the Big Red and held
the ball for the final three minutes. They were unable to get off a
good shot as the Big Red defense made a final stand and sent the
game into overtime.
Cornell got the first possession of overtime after winning the
face-off and got off two shots that went wide, with Army scooping
the second off the ground to take its possession. Fiore made his
last save with two minutes remaining in overtime, and after Army
got it back, Max Feely scooped up a loose ball and fired it ahead
to Scott Austin. Austin found a streaking Hurley, who beat Paleski
1-on-1 to give Cornell the sudden victory win.
