Second-Half Run Propels Loyola Past Bellarmine
from press release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Loyola University
Maryland used a pair of 4-0 second-half runs to outscore host
Bellarmine, 11-4, after halftime, and the 10th-ranked Greyhounds
went on to a 14-8 ECAC Lacrosse League victory on Wednesday
afternoon at Owsley Frazier Stadium.
Trailing 5-4 at halftime, Collin Finnerty scored less than three
minutes into the second half, tying the game and starting
Loyola’s run.
Patrick Fanshaw and Eric Lusby added goals for the Greyhounds (3-0
overall, 2-0 ECAC) over the next two minutes, and Finnerty tallied
another goal with 10:13 remaining to cap the stretch with Loyola on
top, 7-4.
Bellarmine (3-2, 0-1) rallied to within a goal, 7-6, as Sean Doyle
scored with 5:04 to play in the third, but Finnerty score his
career-high fifth goal with time expiring in the quarter to give
the Greyhounds an 8-6 advantage starting the fourth.
Finnerty’s fifth goal increased his career-best by one. He
has scored four goals on three occasions, the last coming on April
25, 2009, against Hobart.
His final tally also ignited a second 4-0 run for the Greyhounds.
Lusby scored twice, wrapped J.P. Dalton’s first goal of the
season, to put Loyola ahead, 11-6, with 9:54 remaining in the
game.
Doyle scored again for the Knights, paring the Greyhounds advantage
back to four with 6:49 left, but Fanshaw scored his second and
third goals of the game at 5:59 and 2:18, and Josh Hawkins added
another Loyola score with 1:10 remaining.
The Greyhounds’ second-half success could be traced back to
improved possession. Loyola won just 3-of-9 faceoffs in the first
half, but it was successful on 11-of-16 restarts in the second.
John Schiavone finished the game 12-of-21 from the ‘X’
and is now 23-of-39 (.590) over Loyola’s last two games.
Loyola also picked up 18 groundballs in the second half to
Bellarmine’s 10.
Jake Hagelin made a season-high 12 saves in goal for the
Greyhounds, while Dillon Ward and Scott Bowles combined for 11
saves for the Knights.
In addition to Finnerty’s five goals, Lusby (3) and Fanshaw
(3) also had multi-goal games for Loyola. Matt Langan and Taylor
Ebsary each tallied two assists.
Doyle finished with four goals to lead the Knights.
Schiavone picked up seven ground balls to lead all players, while
Ebsary had five and Hawkins grabbed three. Ebsary and Kyle Cottrell
each caused two turnovers for the Greyhounds.
Loyola is back in action on Saturday, March 6, when it plays No. 3
Notre Dame at 4 p.m. in the Konica Minolta Inside Lacrosse Face-Off
Classic. The game will be the third of a tripleheader at M&T
Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
