Perini Scores Seven as No. 20 Lafayette Beats Penn
from press release
EASTON, Pa. - The Penn men's lacrosse team had
an answer for Lafayette's first punch Wednesday night at the
Leopards' Rappolt Field, but the 20th-ranked Leopards dealt a
haymaker in the third quarter and the Quakers had no response as
Lafayette won, 14-9.
With the win, Lafayette remains unbeaten through its first three
games. Penn (0-2) is still looking for its first win under head
coach Mike Murphy.
Lafayette held a substantial advantage in possession and shots
through much of the first half, building up a 5-1 lead before the
second quarter was two minutes old. The Leopards needed nearly
eight minutes to get on the board on a Tom Perini goal, and almost
four minutes went by before Will Amling matched him to tie the
score. However, Lafayette's Matt Mersky scored unassisted with 1:14
left in the quarter, and then Perini notched his second with just
15 seconds left. The second quarter began with Mersky and Steve
Serling tallying goals.
Midway through the second quarter, Lafayette's advantage on the
shot chart was 25-6. That changed when Dan Savage netted a shot off
an Al Kohart feed. Perini netted his third with 5:53 left in the
half, but Penn came back with goals from Savage, Rob McMullen and
Corey Winkoff to make it a 6-5 game at the break.
The third quarter was the difference.
Perini led Lafayette with seven goals while Mersky finished with
three goals and Serling had two. Bauer dished out five assists.
Kohart, For Penn, McMullen and Savage each had two goals, while
Winkoff finished the night with a goal and two assists.
