Doubled-up: Moran, VMI Roll Presbyterian
from press release
CLINTON, S.C. - VMI lacrosse got four goals from Tim Moran
and a career-high four assists from Jacob Weimer as the Keydets
earned their second straight win of the young season, 14-7, over
the Presbyterian College Blue Hose in a non-conference contest
played Tuesday in Clinton, S.C.
Moran's four goals were a season-high and all came in the first
half, as the Keydets took a commanding 9-1 lead early before
playing reserves late in the game. Weimer's four helpers surpassed
his previous career best of three, set in last year's season finale
against Canisius. Drew Leonard had a career-best five points and,
for the second straight game, eight different Keydets scored goals
as VMI moved to 2-2 for the first time since the 2005 season. PC
dropped to 1-2 on the year.
The home team got on the board quickly, as the Blue Hose Devin
Pinkston beat VMI keeper Kelly McMinn just 1:21 into the game to
give PC a 1-0 lead early. VMI responded with one of its best runs
in recent memory, as the Keydets scored nine unanswered goals and
took control of the game.
The spurt started just 1:24 after Pinkston's goal, as Moran found
Colin Bosse for VMI's first goal of the day. Weimer got his first
assist at 10:55, feeding Brett Leonard for a score, and
back-to-back Moran goals followed at 5:26 and 5:08 to make it 4-1,
VMI. Bobby Davis capped the first quarter scoring with his lone
goal of the day, as he converted off a pass from Drew Leonard with
88 seconds left in the period, and the Keydets held a 5-1 lead
after the opening 15 minutes.
The visitors had outshot PC 13-4 in the first quarter, and that
trend continued in the second, which opened with another Bosse
goal. This score came off a pass from Weimer at the 14:08 mark.
Bosse notched another point just 32 seconds later, when he found
Brett Leonard for VMI's seventh score of the day. The run ended
with Moran's final two goals, coming with 9:53 and 6:09 left in the
half, and the Keydets held a 9-1 lead.
PC got back on the board with 2:08 to go in the half, but VMI
answered with Drew Leonard's fourth goal of the season to retake
the eight-goal cushion, 10-2. The Blue Hose would add a late goal
to account for the halftime score, 10-3. VMI outshot the home team
24-11 in the first half, and took advantage of 14 Blue Hose
turnovers during the first 30 minutes of play.
The Keydets added to their lead in the third quarter. For the
second straight game, Bernie Mowbray found the back of the net.
Mowbray scored off a dish from Drew Leonard at the 10:41 mark, and
Leonard then scored the game's next goal, his second of the
contest. That score came at 7:20, and gave VMI its biggest lead of
the day, 12-3.
The home team scored four of the next five goals, as reserves began
to take the field for VMI. McMinn was rested after the third
quarter, and several players saw their first collegiate action in
the final period. That list included Tom Moran, brother of Tim, who
had the goal during the PC run. That score was the first collegiate
goal for the younger Moran brother, and it came with 10:34 to
play.
The Blue Hose push made the score 13-7 when the run ended with 5:34
left, but the Keydets notched the final score of the day. Justin
Ong capped the day's goals with his first career score, as the
senior beat PC keeper Jon Athens with 3:05 to go to account for the
final margin.
On the day, PC outshot VMI 40-32; however, much of that margin came
in the second half with the game already well in hand. McMinn made
10 saves in 45 minutes of action, while Sean McCoy entered for the
final quarter and stopped six shots. Athens made six saves for the
Blue Hose in defeat.
VMI lacrosse will return to action Saturday, as the Keydets play
host to Robert Morris in Lexington. Game time against the
top-scoring team in Division I is set for 1 p.m.
