from press releases
PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Robert Church scored five
goals as Drexel raced out to a big early lead and defeated Saint
Joseph's, 19-5. The Dragons (2-1) scored the first 12 goals of the
game and went on to their second straight win.
Drexel controlled the game from the outset and won the first 12
face-offs of the games, giving the Hawks few possessions in the
first half. Colin Ambler scored the first goal of the game just
1:13 in and got the Dragons' offense going. Scott Perri, who scored
three goals on the day, found the net less than a minute later and
then set up Church's first goal to put the Dragons ahead 3-0 just
five minutes into the game.
Church had all five of his goals in the first half and also had an
assist. He was one of 11 players to score in the game. Perri handed
out two assists and finished with five points, while Craig Owen and
Brendan Glynn each had a pair of goals. Colin Ambler set up three
goals and added one of his own.
Drexel outshot the Hawks, 55-22, and won 22 of the 26 face-offs in
the game. Zak Fisher was 15-for-17 on the face-offs and had 11
ground balls. Ryan West won seven of his nine attempts. Head Coach
Brian Voelker emptied the bench in the second half and every player
who was healthy and dressed played in the game. Mark Manos shut the
Hawks out in the first half and had three saves before being
replaced to start the second half.
Mike Begg scored two goals in a losing effort for the Hawks. Geoff
Desoye had a goal and an assist. Saint Joseph's goalie Griffin
Ferrigan had 14 saves in 30 minutes.
