Campbell Saves Raiders, Edges Vermont

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Patrick Campbell (Massapequa, N.Y.)
scored twice, including the game winner with 18.5 seconds left in
regulation to lift Colgate to an 11-10 victory over visiting
Vermont, Tuesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action at Andy Kerr
Stadium.
Down 10-9 with a little over six minutes left, the Raiders, who
improved to 1-2 overall, knotted the game at 10-10 on the second
goal of the contest by Chris Zielinski (Lancaster, Pa.) with 3:22
remaining. The sophomore later returned to feed Campbell on
the left side of the field on the 15-yard line and he ripped a shot
that beat goalie Alex Plavner for the game winner.
Colgate held three two-goal advantages in the contest that
also featured seven ties. Vermont fell to 0-3 overall.
The Catamounts drew first blood four minutes into the contest
as Liam Thomas netted the first of his game-high five goals.
The Raiders rallied for three goals, one each from Andrew Parietti
(Seattle, Wash.), Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.), and Campbell
within a five minute span to give Colgate its first two-goal lead
at 3-1. With 3:33 left, Thomas fired in his second and the
first period ended with Colgate holding a 3-2 advantage.
Both teams scored twice in the second period. After UVM
knotted the game at 4-4, Parietti netted his second of the game at
12:31 to give the Raiders the lead once again. With the game
all square at 4-4, Peter Baum (Portland, Ore.) tallied his fourth
of the campaign with one second left in the half and Colgate raced
into intermission with a one-goal advantage.
Vermont's Thomas netted his fourth of the game to open
scoring in the third period at 11:40. Colgate answered with
back-to-back goals from David Tucciarone (Rockville Centre, N.Y.)
and Murphy to give the Raiders a 7-5 lead. The Catamounts
scored three of the next four goals and the period ended deadlocked
at 8-8.
Vermont took its first lead of the game since the early
stages by getting on the board first in the fourth with 11:30
remaining on a score by Geoff Worley. Colgate rebounded and
tied the count at 9-9 on Zielinski's first of the season almost
four minutes later. After the sophomore knotted the game, the
Catamounts took their final lead with 6:02 left on Drew Philie's
third of the year.
Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) entered the game in net for
the Raiders to start the second half and got credit with the
victory. The senior saved five in the final 30 minutes after
sophomore Jared Madison (Lawrenceville, N.J.) tallied five stops in
the opening half. Plavner saved 11 in the loss for
Vermont.
Murphy ended up with a four-point afternoon with three goals
and an assist, while Zielinski and Parietti each added three-point
performances.
Colgate returns to action Saturday as it hosts Hobart.
Game time is set for a 1 p.m. start at Andy Kerr Stadium.
