Zindel's OT Goal Leads Marist to Opening Win

FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Junior attack Corey
Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal for the Marist
men’s lacrosse team in its season-opener Saturday night,
taking down Sacred Heart 11-10 in overtime at Campus Field. Zindel
had six points in the game on two goals and four assists. Senior
attack Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) led all scorers with four
goals.
Senior midfield Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) had three goals
and an assist. Freshman Connor Rice (Penfield, N.Y.) had a goal and
two assists in his collegiate debut. His classmate Brendan Price
(Bay Shore, N.Y.) made eight saves for his first collegiate
win.
Marist (1-0) got on the board first when Matt Francis (Lansdale,
Pa.) put a Zindel pass in the back of the net at the 9:55 mark of
the first quarter. Sacred Heart then tied the game with 7:29
remaining in the first when Jon Flood put a rebound past Price to
tie the game 1-1. The Red Foxes took back the lead with 5:11 to go
in the quarter when Sharkey scored his first goal of the season to
put Marist ahead 2-1. Marist outshot the Pioneers 8-5 in the first
quarter, with five of those shots on net.
Sacred Heart (1-2) tied the game early in the second quarter when
Trevor Dauses assisted on a Timmy Katz goal with 14:18 remaining in
the half. Marist responded 4:38 seconds later to take the lead.
Francis forced a Peter Ridge turnover, with Teichmann scoring on
the ensuing possession to put the Red Foxes ahead 3-2 with 9:40
left in the second quarter. Sacred Heart came back and tied the
game 3-3 with 3:44 to go in the half on a Joe Caridi tally. The
Pioneers then took their first lead of the game with 1:20 left in
the second quarter on a Brendan Foley goal. Marist had a chance to
tie the game before halftime, but Tom Trgo made a save on a Bob von
Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) shot at the horn.
The Pioneers grew their lead to two, 5-3, early in the third on a
Flood goal. Marist responded with goals from Sharkey and Rice to
tie the game at 5-5 with 11:34 remaining in the third. The game
continued to be back and forth as Sacred Heart scored back-to-back
goals to take a 7-5 lead at the 3:19 mark of the third. Sharkey
then scored his third goal of the game with 2:05 left in the third
to make the score 7-6.
Teichmann then tied the game 7-7 with his second goal of the game
at the 9:47 mark of the fourth quarter. Marist then took the lead
35 seconds later as Zindel scored a man-up goal to put the Red
Foxes ahead 8-7. After Matt Ferrino tied the game 8-8, Sharkey
scored his fourth goal of the game with 7:11 left in the fourth
quarter to take a 9-8 lead. Sacred Heart would not go away, getting
goals from Evan Morgan and Tim Russo to take a 10-9 lead with 3:15
to go. Teichmann completed his hat trick with 2:27 left in the
fourth quarter to tie the game at 10-10. Marist had three shots to
win the game in regulation, as Zindel, Sharkey, and Teichmann each
had shots on net in the last 30 seconds but could not put one past
Tom Trgo of Sacred Heart.
Francis won the opening faceoff for Marist in the overtime. Zindel
and Mike O’Hagan (Yonkers, N.Y.) each took a shot in the
first minute of overtime but could not score. Sacred Heart did not
touch the ball at all in overtime, as Teichmann fed Zindel for the
game-winner with 1:51 left in the period.
Marist outshot the Pioneers 43-28 with 18 of its shots on goal. The
Red Foxes also held a 33-23 advantage in ground balls and were
17-for-17 on clears. Flood led Sacred Heart with three goals as
Ferrino scored a pair of goals. Trgo made 18 saves.
The Red Foxes will host Holy Cross for its home opener on Tuesday
at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The opening face-off is
scheduled for 3 p.m.
