Fairfield Beats Bryant in Defensive Struggle

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University
men's lacrosse team earned its first win of the year, defeating
visiting Bryant University 5-3 at Alumni Stadium on Saturday
afternoon. The Stags improve to 1-1 on the year, while the
Bulldogs fall to 2-2. The game was the first-ever meeting
between the two school's lacrosse programs.
The Stags got on the board first when Kevin Peters scored an
unassisted goal with 5:14 to play in the second quarter. Just
over two minutes later Ryan Mulford netted a pass from Matt
Plominski for a man-up goal and a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs got
on the board with 40 seconds to play in the first-half on a goal
from Travis Harrington.
The Bulldogs knotted the score early in the second-half as Peter
McMahan struck 2:42 into the period. Fairfield rookie Sam
Snow broke the tie with 9:43 to play as he scored unassisted.
Max Trunz gave the Stags the eventual game-winning tally with 4:57
to play in the third quarter as he scored unassisted. Bryant
got back within a goal on a Max Weisenberg goal with 2:51 to play
in the third quarter. Plominski wrapped up the scoring as
Trunz fed him the ball for a 5-3 lead with 12:44 remaining in the
game.
Joseph Marra took care of the rest in goal for the Stags, earning
his first win of the season, making 14 saves in the contest.
He also picked up a team-high four ground balls. Jameson Love
took the loss for Bryant, making nine saves, against five goals, in
playing the entire game.
Fairfield committed fewer turnovers, 20-18, than the Bulldogs and
were 1-4 in man-up chances, while holding Bryant to 0-2 in
extra-man situations. The Stags were outshot 27-21 on the day
and both teams recorded 28 ground balls. Fairfield cleared
21-25, including 10-11 in the second-half, while Bryant was equally
impressive on the clear, 17-19.
Sean Bannon led the Stags defensive effort with three caused
turnovers, while Reed Marko and Steve Golmont each had two of the
Stags 12 caused turnovers.
The Stags will play their first road game of the 2010 season next
Saturday when they travel to Villanova for a 4 p.m. contest.
