Drexel 'D' Stiffens to Lead Dragons over Vermont

PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel allowed just two goals
over the final three quarters as the Dragons downed Vermont, 9-5,
at Vidas Field. Colin Ambler, Scott Perri and Nick Trizano each
contributed two goals while Ambler and Perri also tacked on an
assist. The victory was only the Dragons' second in 15 previous
meetings between the two schools with the last meeting coming in
2001. The win evened Drexel's record to 1-1 on the season while
Vermont dropped to 0-2.
Vermont raced out to an early 3-1 lead as the Catamounts beat Mark
Manos three times within the game's first 4:24. After Geoff Worley
opened the scoring for the visitors, Ambler evened the game six
seconds later after Ryan West cleanly took the face-off and raced
toward the offensive end. Jack Cranston and Drew Philie scored over
the next two minutes to give the Catamounts a two-goal lead and
prompted Head Coach Brian Voelker to call a time-out. The Dragons
settled down as the defense allowed just two goals over the next 55
minutes of action, including a scoreless second period. The Dragons
pulled a goal closer on Trizano's first career goal with 3:12
remaining in the first period. In the second, Perri evened to the
score after taking a pass from Ambler before Andrew Collins scored
with 6:49 left in the period to close the scoring for the half. The
second quarter featured extremely sloppy play with both teams
combining for 23 turnovers, nearly half of the game's total of
48.
Vermont ended a scoreless streak of more than 25 minutes with the
second half's first goal as Liam Thomas scored unassisted. The
Dragons regained the lead as Andrew Church recorded a man-up goal
on a pass from Kyle Bergman to give Drexel a lead it would not
relinquish. Trizano netted his second of the game with 4:22
remaining in the third to give the Dragons a 6-4 lead heading into
the final quarter. Bergman opened the scoring with a man-up goal
that threatened to put the game away but Drew Philie notched his
second goal of the game as he scored while seated after receving a
hard check in front of the net. With the lead down to two goals,
looked to its co-captain, Ambler, to put the game out of reach with
6:56 remaining Ambler came from behind the cage and bullied his way
in front and fired a clean shot that struck the net. Perri closed
the game with a goal as Voelker picked up his first career victory
at Drexel.
Drexel outshot Vermont, 39-17, and won 11 of the game's 17
face-offs, including an 8-for-12 performance from Zak Fisher. Manos
made six saves in goal while Alex Plavner stopped 10 Drexel shots.
Frank Tufano played well on defense for the Dragons as he recorded
a game-high three caused turnovers and added a pair of groundballs.
