DU Regroups, Gives Tierney First Win As Pioneer

DENVER - The University of Denver men's
lacrosse team (1-2) snagged its first win of the season, defeating
the No. 20 Albany Great Danes (0-1) 17-13 in front of 811 fans at
Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Denver's
offense stepped into high gear as two Pioneers finished the day
with hat-tricks and seven others netted goals to give DU head coach
Bill Tierney his first win in crimson and gold.
"This was a great way to regroup from our two losses last weekend,"
Tierney said. "Our offense has started to find its rhythm and you
can really see our guys working together and understanding what we
are asking of them. We are a young team but I think we proved a lot
to ourselves today with this win."
Sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) and freshman Cameron
Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) both scored three goals each for the
Pioneers. Demopoulos also finished the day with three assists for a
total of six points.
Also contributing for Denver with two goals apiece were junior Todd
Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and sophomores Mark Matthews (Oshawa,
Ontario) and Patrick Rogers (Portland, Ore.), while seniors Charley
Dickenson (Dallas, Texas), John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) and
Cameron Kerr (Cherry Hills Village, Colo.), along with junior
Emerson Eichler (New Vernon, N.J.) and freshman Colin Scott
(Ridgefield, Conn.), all dished in a goal apiece.
Charley Dickenson also finished with a season-high four assists,
moving him into fourth all-time in the Pioneer record books for
assists.
Coming off back-to-back 17-save performances a week ago against No.
1 Syracuse and Jacksonville, ECAC Co-Defender of the Week sophomore
Zander Buteux (Madison, N.J.) made 11 saves to get his first win of
the season. Senior Peter Lowell (Freeport, Maine) also made an
appearance for the Pioneers tallying two saves.
With the scored tied 7-7 at the half, the Pioneers used an
eight-goal barrage in the third quarter and two more goals in the
fourth quarter to seal their first win of the season. The Great
Danes made several attempts to answer, but were only able to score
six goals in the final 30 minutes of action.
Derek Kreuzer, Dave Brock and Joe Pompo led the scoring duties for
the Great Danes, scoring three goals each, while Joe Resetarits
added two goals and one assist. Albany goalie John Carroll finished
the day making 12 saves, stopping eight Pioneer shots in the first
half.
As a team, Denver finished the day with 37 shots, held the
advantage in ground balls 45 to 32 and converted on three of five
man-up opportunities.
Next up, the Pioneers host the 9th Annual DU Face-Off Classic,
welcoming Penn, Lehigh and Air Force for the two-day event at Peter
Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Action starts off on Saturday, March 6 as
Air Force will face Lehigh at 11 a.m., followed immediately by the
Pioneers' game against Penn. The Classic will conclude on Sunday,
March 7 as Air Force will take on Penn in the first game of the
day, followed by DU's game against Lehigh at 1:30 p.m.
