Rutgers Hammers Wagner, Wins By 20

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Wagner College
men’s lacrosse team dropped a 24-4 decision to BIG EAST
member Rutgers in the season opener for both teams at blustery
Wagner College Stadium.
The Seahawks were competitive early in the game, taking a 2-1 lead
on goals by freshman midfielder Colin O’Rourke (Worecester,
MA/St. John’s Shrewsbury) and junior attack Will Macumber
(Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor). Rutgers then rattled off the
next seven goals to take control of the game and an 8-2 lead. The
Scarlet Knights led 12-4 at halftime and out-scored the Seahawks
12-0 in the second half en route to the victory.
Rutgers out-shot the Seahawks 55-17, won 25-of-31 faceoffs and held
a 32-15 edge in ground balls.
O’Rourke scored two goals and assisted on another in his
debut for the Seahawks while fellow freshman Cody Isdaner
(Gladwyne, PA/Episcopal Academy) added two points on one goal and
one assist.
In goal, Peter Rubin (East Rockaway, NY/East Rockaway) came up with
eight saves while playing the first three quarters of the game
before giving way to Michael Gutkin (Freehold, NJ/Freehold
Township) who stopped five shots during the fourth quarter.
For Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights were led in scoring by Gerhard
Buehning who had six points on three goals and three assists. Ted
Stanwick, Kevin Hover and Kory Kelly all notched four points apiece
for the Scarlet Knights.
Starting goalie Rudy Butler made three saves in the opening half
while Billy Olin and Joseph Donnelly split time in goal in the
second half and recorded two and one save, respectively.
Wagner is next in action on Sunday, Feb. 28 when the Seahawks host
Robert Morris in a Noon start.
