RMU Drops Penn St. Again, This Time in Shootout

from staff reports

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Robert Morris and Penn State combined for 41 goals and 115 shots, as the Colonials upset the Nittany Lions in the men's lacrosse teams' season opener for the second straight year with a 24-17 victory.

Kiel Matisz (5g, 1a), Patrick Smith (4g, 1a) and Keith Lee (4g) paced the Colonials' offensive eruption. Trevor Moore added three goals, while Corbyn TaoBrambleby, Kevin Brownell and Kyle Buchanan netted three apiece.

Robert Morris led 12-4 after the first quarter. Penn State, which saw its potential starting goalie, redshirt freshman Steven Rastivo, transfer to North Carolina in the offseason, actually outscored the Colonials the rest of the way. But the damage was done.

Matthew Mackrides (5g, 1a), Billy Gribbin (4g, 1a) and Chris Hogan (4g) were the Nittany Lions' big scorers. Hogan attempted 25 shots in the game.

Goalkeeper Sal Barcia earned the win for Robert Morris, making 26 saves and allowing 16 goals in just under 55 minutes of action. Penn State starter Dave Baker was relieved after allowing 11 goals and not registering a save. John Nichols fared a little better, but not much, allowing 13 goals and making six saves.

The Nittany Lions held a 25-20 advantage in faceoffs, led by Charley Henneghan (16-for-23) and outshot the Colonials 75-40.
