SB's McBride, Crowley Combine for 19 Points
from staff reports
STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Canadian cohorts Jordan McBride and Kevin Crowley were unstoppable Saturday, combining for 19 points in the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team's 21-14 victory over visiting Siena.
McBride scored eight goals and added two assists. Crowley had four goals and five assists.
Siena lost despite a career-high seven goals from sophomore Bryan Neufield.
Stony Brook (1-0) jumped all over the Saints and led 12-2 to
start the game. McBride scored six goals during that span.
After allowing two early goals in the third quarter, Siena (0-1)
made a charge and rattled off six straight. Neufeld had four during
that run and he finished with seven goals on eight shots. But Stony
Brook matched Siena the rest of the way.
Siena missed Scott Montgomery '09 at the faceoff X. The Saints won
just 10-of-39 draws and Stony Brook had a 47-19 edge in ground
balls.
Stony Brook, who was picked co-favorite in the America East
Preseason Coaches' Poll, converted 4-of-7 extra man opportunities.
The Saints ranked second in the nation last season on man-down with
a .817 percentage.
Senior goalie and Preseason All-MAAC selection Brent Herbst made
14 saves in the loss. He faced 47 shots.
Siena entered the game short-handed. Starting attackman and last
year's second leading scorer Jordan Loftus, defensive midfielder
and co-captain Mike Whalen and long poles Faus Bernabo and Joe
Vaccari did not play.
Freshman Danny Martinsen scored two goals in his first collegiate
game.
The Saints return to action next Sunday when they play at Johns
Hopkins. The game starts at noon and will be televised nationally
on ESPNU.
