CATONSVILLE, Md. -- University of Delaware senior All-American Curtis Dickson picked a good time for a career day.

The high-scoring senior from British Columbia, the second highest active goal-scorer in NCAA Division I, erupted for seven goals and finished the game in thrilling fashion, as he scored with 1:07 left in triple overtime to lead the Blue Hens to an 11-10 win over No. 11-ranked UMBC Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

The Blue Hens, off to a 2-0 start for the sixth time in the last seven years, overcame a goal in the last minute by the host Retrievers (0-1) that sent the game into overtime. The game was only the second triple-overtime contest in Delaware history but the first since defeating Albany 8-7 back in 2008 at Rullo Stadium.

Senior Martin Cahill added three goals for the Hens, who outshot UMBC 42-38 and held a decisive 16-9 advantage on faceoffs thanks to the play of Tommy Lee.

Kyle Wimer and Bobby Stockton each scored three goals for UMBC, which was playing its season opener.

The Blue Hens led throughout the tightly-contested game until the Retrievers (0-1) tallied three unanswered goals -- including back-to-back tallies by Stockton -- to take a 9-8 lead with 3:11 remaining in the fourth quarter.

A wild final three minutes ensued. Delaware tied the game at 9 when Kevin Kaminski fed Cahill at the 2:22 mark. The Hens struck again 30 seconds later to regain the lead when Dickson finished an Eric Smith feed.

After a UMBC timeout in the final minute of regulation, Stockton ripped an unassisted goal with 36 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime tied 10-10.

Both teams had their share of opportunities through the first two overtimes. Neither could capitalize. The Retrievers even squandered an extra-man opporunity in the first overtime.

Dickson's goal in triple overtime was unassisted and came on his 15th shot of the game. Cahill added three goals for Delaware, while goalie Noah Fossner made 10 saves.

Wimer, an All-American midfielder, added three assists to his three goals for a team-high six points in the losing cause.

The Hens avenged a 14-9 loss to the Retrievers last season and downed UMBC for the fourth time in the last five outings. Next up for the Blue Hens is a meeting on Tuesday night at No. 5 ranked Johns Hopkins in a rematch of the 2007 NCAA national semifinals won by the Blue Jays 8-3.

Dickson, who extended his consecutive point-scoring streak to 42 straight games, pulling to within five of the all-time Delaware record, surpassed his previous high goal-scoring game of six against Drexel during the 2008 season as he notched his second hat trick of the season and 17th of his career. The seven goals is the most scored by a Delaware player since All-American John Grant scored eight vs. Rutgers on March 29, 1998.

Dickson scored five first-half goals to stake the Hens to a 6-4 lead at the break, scoring his fourth straight goal for the Hens with 2:02 left in the half to give UD a 6-3 lead. UMBC got a goal from Jamie Kimbles with 49 seconds left to narrow the deficit to two goals.

Delaware built the lead to 7-4 after three periods as the Hens shutout the Retrievers and found the net just once when Cahill tallied off a feed from Carter Bloor with 3:45 left in the stanza.

The fourth quarter was a wild one that saw nine total goals scored, including six by UMBC as it made its comeback. Latham and Grimm scored early in the quarter to cut the lead to 7-6 but the Hens answered on a goal by Steverson from a Dickson feed to push the lead to 8-6 with 9:36 remaining in regulation. But UMBC stormed back with four straight goals, the last by Stockton with 3:11 left to give the Retrievers their first solo lead of the day.

Delaware broke the string as Cahill scored with 2:22 left to tie the game for the fifth time and Dickson gave the Hens the lead back just 30 seconds later with his sixth goal off an assist by Eric Smith. UMBC then the game into overtime on a goal by Stockton with just 36 seconds left.

Neither team scored during the first or second overtime periods before Dickson finally ended the marathon with his seventh goal with 1:07 left in the third overtime period.
