Bucknell Stifles Ohio State for First Victory
from press release
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Charlie Streep (New Canaan,
Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) scored three goals and assisted on another,
and the No. 17/18 Bucknell men's lacrosse team rallied from a pair
of early two-goal deficits to defeat Ohio State 11-5 on Saturday
afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Playing their home opener after dropping a heartbreaker in
overtime to No. 2 Duke last week, the Bison also received two goals
from Ryan Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) and nine saves in
relief from freshman goalie Kyle Feeney (Greenwich,
Conn./Greenwich), who earned his first collegiate win.
Chris Palmer (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and Billy Eisenreich
(Chatham, N.J./Chatham) both produced a goal and two assists as
part of a big day for the Bison midfield. The top two middie units
combined for eight goals and five assists, while Jake Clarke (Cos
Cob, Conn./Greenwich) had another big day at the faceoff X, winning
10 of 14 with a game-high seven ground balls.
Bucknell got off to a slow start, as Ohio State jumped out to
leads of 2-0 and 4-2. Dominique Alexander started the scoring for
the Buckeyes (1-1) with a shot that trickled through the legs of
Sam Finnell (Skillman, N.J./Deerfield Academy). One minute later
Jeff Tundo made it 2-0 with a hard lefty shot from the right
wing.
Eisenreich put the Bison on the board with 2:06 left in the first
quarter when he finished a nice feed from Austin Winter (Boonton
Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes), who recorded his 98th career assist.
Klipstein tied it at 2-apiece just over six minutes into the second
period, but two goals 48 seconds apart from Jarred Bowman and James
Green gave the Buckeyes their two goal lead back, and it brought
Feeney back into Bucknell cage.
The Bison dominated the rest of the game, however, outscoring Ohio
State 9-1 over the final 37 minutes. Feeney was outstanding, making
nine saves over that span, and Bucknell rallied to take the lead by
halftime.
A big ground ball by Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) led
to Streep's first goal of the season, then just 47 seconds later
Brandon Buchmayr (Darien, Conn./Darien) tied it with a hard shot
through traffic. After another faceoff win by Clarke, Klipstein
finished a Palmer feed with 3:47 left in the half to put the Bison
ahead for good at 5-4.
After a six-goal second period, things settled down in the third.
The Bison were still clinging to that one-goal lead until the 6:47
mark, when Palmer scored perhaps the biggest goal of the day, a
spinning shot from about 10 yards out in the slot.
Winter scored 3:17 into the fourth on a neat ankle-high
quick-stick off a feed from Eisenreich, then only a minute later
Streep made it 8-4. Ohio State ended a 34:15 scoreless drought when
Logan Schuss scored while drawing a penalty at the same time.
Clarke controlled the important shorthanded faceoff, however, and
Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) scored a man-down goal
with 3:14 to play to make it 9-5.
With the Buckeyes forced to chase the ball, Danylsyhyn and Streep
punched in goals 25 seconds apart to finish the scoring, the last
coming with 2:28 to play.
Bucknell outshot Ohio State 38-22 and won the ground ball battle
24-20. Ohio State goalie Brandon Freeman had some impressive
close-range saves and finished with 11 for the game. The Buckeyes
were 1-for- 5 with an extra man, while the Bison were 1-for-1 and
are now 4-for-5 on the season.
The Bison now have a 5-1 series lead over the Buckeyes, although
in each of the previous three seasons the teams played one-goal
games, including a triple-overtime win by Bucknell in 2008 and an
OT win by Ohio State last year.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday at Towson at 1 p.m.
