SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Cody Jamieson scored a career-high four goals to lead top-ranked Syracuse (1-0) past Denver, 15-9, in the season opener for both teams at the Carrier Dome on Friday, Feb. 19. The game marked Hall of Fame coach Bill Tierney's debut at Denver.

Jamieson scored on four of his six shots against the Pioneers (0-1). He led an Orange offense that saw 11 different players score goals and six players record at least two points.

The Orange’s other offensive leaders were junior attackman Stephen Keogh, who contributed two goals, and senior Chris Daniello, junior Jeremy Thompson, junior Jovan Miller and freshman JoJo Marasco, who each had a goal and an assist. Miller also collected six ground balls to tie for team-high honors in that category.

Sophomore Alex Demopoulos (Canton, Conn.) led the Pioneers with four goals, while sophomore backup goalie Zander Buteux (Madison, N.J.) finished the night with 17 saves.

“I thought we settled things down in the second quarter and were able to get some good scoring opportunities,” said head coach Bill Tierney. “Galloway did a great job tonight, proving why he is one of the best goalies in the nation. It’s not going to happen overnight for us, but tonight was a good barometer to see where we are at and what we still need to work on.”

Syracuse got off to fast start Friday with two goals in the opening minute and never let up. Miller tallied the first goal of the year for Syracuse just 41 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Kevin Drew followed with an unassisted tally on the team’s next possession to put the hosts up 2-0 at the 14:07 mark of the first quarter.

The two early goals kick-started a blitzkrieg that saw the Orange score on eight of its 13 shots in the opening period on its way to an 8-2 advantage after 15 minutes. Syracuse tallied the last four goals of the quarter, including two in the span of six seconds to close the period’s scoring. After Thompson assisted on a Josh Amidon goal at the 3:31 mark, he won the next faceoff and found the cage himself with 3:25 left in the quarter to push the SU lead to six.

Overall, seven different SU players registered goals in the first quarter, including Jamieson who found the cage twice.

The Orange continued to pour it on, leading 10-3 at the half, and taking its largest margin (14-4) after a three-goal run in the third quarter that featured back-to-back Jamieson tallies.

The Pioneers rallied late, scoring five of the game’s last six goals to close the gap. They outscored the Orange, 4-1, in the fourth quarter, but never seriously threatened the hosts.

SU junior goalie John Galloway made 11 saves in just over three quarters of action. He made six in the third period alone, including five in the opening minutes to keep Denver from climbing back into the game.

Alex Demopoulos scored four goals to lead the Pioneers. The only other multi-point scorer for Denver was Charley Dickenson (two assists). Starting Denver goalie Peter Lowell was knocked out early after surrendering eight goals in the first 11:35. Zander Buteux played the remainder of the game between the pipes and totaled 17 saves.

The Orange dominated the faceoff circle Friday, winning 19 of the game’s 27 draws. Senior Gavin Jenkinson was 9-for-13 on faceoffs and Thompson was 7-for-11. Their prowess helped key the offense in the early going as Syracuse won 11 of the game’s first 15 draws to help build its advantage.

Game Notes: Senior Brandon Conlin received the first start of his career on close defense in place of junior John Lade, who missed the game due to injury … Thompson started his first game as a member of the Orange … He was part of SU’s first midfield line … Sophomore Joe Moore recorded the first point of his career with an assist in the third quarter … Redshirt freshmen Spenser Parnell and Pete Coleman both scored their first collegiate goals in the contest.
