Colgate Men Open Season at Binghamton

from press release

The Colgate University men's lacrosse team will begin the 2010 season on the road at Binghamton on Saturday (Feb. 20).

SERIES NOTES

The Raiders and Bearcats are facing-off for the eighth time with Colgate leading the series 7-0. The Raiders won last season in Hamilton 11-9.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

The Raiders were picked third in the preseason poll after finishing last season with a 5-1 mark in Patriot League play. Eventual champion Navy edged Colgate in the Patriot League semifinals. The Raiders must replace three-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year Brandon Corp, but will have the services of Mike Crown (Winnetka, Ill.) and Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) in the back. Harrington made 9.80 saves per game as a junior.

SCOUTING BINGHAMTON

Binghamton (3-12, 2-3) reached the America East Championship as the No. 4 seed last season and nearly upset UMBC in the semifinals before falling 9-8 in double overtime. Ed Stephenson's team will be led by junior Derrick Danieu, a first-team all-conference selection last season.

TOP BOSS

Colgate University head coach Jim Nagle is in his ninth season at the helm of the Colgate lacrosse program. He sports a 72-49 record and is 137-88 in his 14 seasons as a head coach. His 72 victories and .584 win percentage are the second most by a Colgate men's lacrosse coach. Harvey Potter has the most wins with 80 victories, while Michael Toop (1988-91) has the best win percentage at .708 (34-14). Nagle has guided Colgate to its first Patriot League Tournament Championship, its highest national ranking, and a 19-5 record in Patriot League play over the past four seasons. The Raiders posted three straight 11-win seasons for the first time in history under Nagle's watch.

MEN'S LACROSSE RANKED 20TH IN USILA COACHES POLL

The Colgate University men's lacrosse team will begin the 2010 season ranked No. 20 in the USILA Coaches Poll.

Two-time defending national champion Syracuse was dubbed the top team in the nation, according to the poll, while Navy headlined the Patriot League with the 11th spot.

Colgate welcomes back two All-Patriot League selections from a year ago in senior Mike Crown and junior Greg Perkins (Alexandria, Va.), who were both selected to the second team. The Raiders also welcome back senior Ryan McClelland (Brampton, Ont.), who was one of 30 players selected to the Team Canada roster.

At No. 20, Colgate is one of three Patriot League teams in the USILA poll. Navy is ranked No. 11, while Bucknell is ranked No. 19. Army is also receiving votes in the coaches' poll, which forecasts another competitive year of Patriot League lacrosse.

RAIDERS RANKED 21ST ON INSIDE LACROSSE FACE-OFF YEARBOOK

The Colgate University men's lacrosse team has been ranked in the top-25 of the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook. The Raiders enter the preseason preview in the 21st spot after closing out the 2009 season 9-6.

Two-time defending national champion Syracuse was dubbed the top team in the nation, according to the poll, while Navy headlined the Patriot League with the 10th spot.

RAIDERS FACE MARYLAND AT LACROSSE DAY OF CHAMPIONS

The Colgate University men's Lacrosse team will join the Indians Rock Community Foundation for its third annual Lacrosse Day of Champions at Manhasset High School. The Day of Champions will feature two events spread out over four separate days.

The Raiders will headline the second event on May 8th as they take on Maryland at Manhasset High School. Defending New York state high-school champion Manhasset versus conference rival Cold Spring Harbor will follow the Colgate-Maryland game.

The Lacrosse Day of Champions events start on Friday, March 5 with youth tournaments for grades 4-9. Some slots are still available, and teams can register at www.irockfundhome.org. Each team will be guaranteed at least three games. Each roster player will receive complimentary tickets to both the March 6 Haverford-St. Lawrence game and the May 8 Maryland-Colgate game. Visit the web site for more details about the tournament and registration.

Tickets for the May 8th Colgate-Maryland game will be priced at $10 for adults and $5 for those 18 years and younger. Tickets will go on sale April 1st at the www.irockfundhome.org web site, and the game is expected to be a sell-out.

MCCLELLAND NAMED TO TEAM CANADA 30-MAN ROSTER

Colgate men's lacrosse senior Ryan McClelland was selected as one of 30 players to the Team Canada roster. Fifty-six players were at a Thanksgiving weekend camp in Toronto and now general manager Johnny Mouradian and head coach David Huntley and his staff will take their time before arriving at the 23-man roster that will represent Canada at the world field lacrosse championship in Manchester, England, next July.
