Lacrosse Magazine has put the finishing touches on its 2010
college preview issue, which mailed US Lacrosse
members the first week of February. LM canvassed rival coaches
to give us their anonymous take on the top 10 preseason ranked
teams for Division I men's and women's lacrosse.

WHO'S BACK
A Ned Crotty (Sr.)
Found a niche on attack with nation-leading 55a, but with Duke
thin at midfield after Schoeffel and Turri, could we see more of
him at midfield? Either way, the offense starts in Crotty’s
stick.
D Parker McKee (Sr.)
6-foot-2, 215-pound defenseman ranked second in nation among
non-faceoff specialists with 93 GBs. Came out of the blue and
nearly joined Crotty on 2010 U.S. team after impressive tryout --
then helped burn Team USA at the recent Champion Challenge.
A Max Quinzani (Sr.)
What he lacks in size (5-8, 170), he makes up in handle. Off-ball
wonder finishes what Crotty starts, with 131 goals in 58 career
games. Ten of his team-high 46 goals came in man-up situations last
year.
M Steve Schoeffel (Sr.)
Leader of Blue Devils' midfield (17g, 7a) plays key role in
keeping defenses honest. If he's shooting well, opponents must
slide, freeing up Duke's dangerous attackmen for better looks.
D Mike Manley (Jr.)
With McKee, forms top 1-2 punch on defense in the nation. Expect
Tom Clute, Tom Montelli and Dan Theodoridis to rotate through the
third spot depending on the matchups. Duke's defense is its most
formidable entity.
WHO'S NOT
M Brad Ross
Team's top dodger and shooter out of the midfield position was
also a valued leader in the locker room.
G Rob Schroeder
Duke's biggest question is in the goal, vacated by Schroeder, who
was a fifth-year senior and had a calming presence on the Blue
Devils' high-pressure defense. After Sean Brady was suspended for
the season, it's left inexperienced Mike Rock and Dan Wigrizer as
the Nos. 1 and 2 goalies, respectively -- and that could flip flop.
WHO'S NEW
A Josh Offit
Made his presence known with three goals in the Blue Devils' upset
of the U.S. at Champion Challenge -- a game which he started
because Crotty was playing for Team USA. At the least, he'll rotate
in as a fourth attackman, but don't be surprised if he usurps Zach
Howell as a starter or gives Danowski more ammo to bump Crotty to
midfield.
M David Lawson
The crowned jewel of the Duke's Class of 2013 and of ESPN Rise
magazine cover fame, Lawson's game is balanced, his lacrosse IQ
allowing him to adjust on the fly.
X FACTOR
With Shane Walterhoefer gone from UNC, fifth-year senior
Sam Payton is the top returning faceoff specialist
in the ACC. More possessions for this offense is a frightening
thought for opponents, not to mention Payton's ability to keep this
defense fresh.
RIVAL COACHES' TAKES
"Big question in the goal. Can the freshman step in and play
well if needed the whole season?"
"Can the last group of fifth-year players do what the previous two
groups could not?"
"Great experience and strong defense should be the backbone."
"Ned Crotty is good. They had great chemistry last year on
offense. Defense plays with a chip on its shoulder."
"Duke is maybe if they’re not the best team in the country.
I think they’re certainly … terrific. I think
they’re the best preseason wise."
"I think their defense is terrific. But when it gets down to
crunch time, do they have enough middies who can run by you and
score?"
"They are a unique challenge. It’s hard to compete with
someone when everyone gets five years of eligibility."
