Lacrosse Magazine has put the finishing touches on its 2010
college preview issue, which mailed US Lacrosse
members the first week of February. LM canvassed rival coaches
to give us their anonymous take on the top 10 preseason ranked
teams for Division I men's and women's lacrosse.

WHO'S BACK
A Billy Bitter (Sr.)
Player of the Year candidate led UNC in both goals (46) and
assists (25) last year and posted a jaw-dropping eight goals in the
NCAA tournament win over UMBC. UNC’s offensive depth should
take pressure off Bitter this season.
M Sean Delaney (Sr.)
Consider this: Despite Bitter's stellar campaign, UNC named
Delaney its 2009 Offensive MVP. His 35 goals were the most by a UNC
midfielder in 13 years. Will carry the first midfield which lost
some of its depth when Sean Burke went down with a season-ending
injury in the offseason.
D Ryan Flanagan (Jr.)
Preseason All-American is the key to the Tar Heels' defensive
front line. He led the team with 37 caused turnovers and finished
second in groundballs (67).
A Gavin Petracca (Sr.)
Developed great chemistry with Bitter on attack, with 26 goals and
17 assists. Pick your poison here. Petracca was injured in the
fall, but should be a go for the spring.
LSM/D Michael Jarvis (Sr.)
Underrated long pole (24 caused turnovers) and UNC captain could
slip into the team's third starting close defense slot.
WHO'S NOT
A Bart Wagner
Counted four game-winners among his 38 goals in '09. Junior
college transfer Ed Prevost or freshman Marcus Holman are
candidates to step into Wagner's spot.
M Ben Hunt
Outside threat notched six man-up goals, most on the team in '09.
Look no further than the splash he made with the Washington
Bayhawks at the end of last year's MLL season to know his
value.
FO Shane Walterhoefer
NCAA's top faceoff specialist in '09 won 63 percent of draws.
Junior short stick Michael Burns, who took just 14
faceoffs last year, steps in at the "X." Big shoes to fill.
“Sixty-three percent doesn’t come around too
often,” Breschi said.
G Grant Zimmerman
Four-year starter's college career ended early with a
season-ending injury in the Big City Classic, giving then-freshman
James Petracca an opportunity to gain experience.
WHO'S NEW
A Ed Prevost
Top player out the junior college ranks was the NJCAA Attackman
and Player of the Year in 2008. He then switched to midfield and
was a juco All-American at that position in '09. Will either start
as the third attackman or rotate in as a fourth.
A Marcus Holman
Most ready-to-start player of UNC's freshman class is currently
slotted as the third starting attackman next to Bitter and Petracca
-- which speaks volumes of his fall ball performance.
G Steven Rastivo
Heir apparent to Drew Adams at Penn State dropped a bomb in the
offseason when he transferred to North Carolina. He has a great
outlet pass with quick hands and ball-stopping ability.
X FACTOR
According to tarheelblue.com's
interview with Breschi, he has yet to commit to a starting
goalkeeper. He called it "a wide open situation going into the
spring." It's a good problem for UNC, which boasts three goalies --
Petracca, Rastivo and Chris Madalon -- who could
legitimately start. Petracca has the experience, but Madalon has
the intriguing upside. Rastivo presumably wouldn't transfer from a
situation in which he was expected to start to one in which he
isn't, but he did not report to the team until January.
RIVAL COACHES' TAKES
"Billy Bitter is good. They seemed to play hard and with a lot
of confidence last year under Coach Breschi."
"Can Bitter replicate his success with key losses at attack?"
"They have the second-best player in the country with Bitter."
"Will the onslaught of top recruits help fuel Bitter and the rest
of the group?"
