Super Nova: Wildcats Capture Colonial AQ
from press releases
TOWSON, Md. - Towson's late rally fell short as
Villanova hung on to beat the Tigers 10-9 Saturday night in the
Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse championship.
The win gave Villanova (11-5) its first CAA title and earned the
Wildcats their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers
end their season with a 7-10 record.
Villanova led by as many as five goals (8-3 and 9-4) before the
Tigers mounted a late rally. With the Wildcats leading 10-6 with
6:27 remaining to play Bill McCutcheon, Justin Scheider and Tim
Stratton scored for the Tigers to narrow the gap to 10-9.
Stratton's goal came with 43.3 seconds left. The Tigers had a shot
with five seconds remaining but missed and lost possession when
they were called for a crease violation.
C.J. Small scored the game's first goal. Chris MacDonald gave the
Wildcats a 2-0 lead before the Tigers could score. Scheider put
Towson on the scoreboard with an unassisted marker with 1:39 left
in the opening period.
The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a goal. Towson then
went on a 2-0 run with goals by Brocker Armour and Randall Cooper
to draw even with the Wildcats at 3-3 at the 8:52 mark.
Towson failed to take advantage of an illegal stick penalty that
put the Tigers a man up for three minutes. Cooper's goal was extra
man but the Wildcats scored two shorthanded goals for a 5-3 lead.
The Wildcats never looked back after that.
Villanova increased its run to 5-0 with three more goals to take an
8-3 halftime lead.
