Binghamton Reaches America East Tourney

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Senior attack Jake Boyce and
junior midfielder Steve Carlson Binghamton (3-11, 2-3 AE) Hartford
(2-11, 1-4 AE) in an America East Conference men's lacrosse game on
Saturday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. With the win, the
Bearcats earn their sixth consecutive berth in the upcoming America
East Tournament, which will begin on Wednesday night. Binghamton
will be the No. 4 seed and face top-seeded and host UMBC in the
semifinals.
Boyce now has 61 career goals and moves into second place all time
in school history. He passes Rob Williams (2004-07), a current
Bearcat assistant coach, who netted 58 career goals. Boyce now has
eight career hat trick while Carlson recorded his second career
three-goal effort.
Hartford was paced by Ryan Compitello, who also finished with three
goals. He scored twice in the opening nine minutes of the game as
the Hawks built an early 3-0 lead. Carlson scored with 5:01 left in
the opening period, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
Boyce was the star of the second quarter, scoring twice and adding
an assist as the Bearcats took a 5-4 halftime lead. When senior
midfielder Kevin Joy made it 6-4 with 2:30 gone in the third
quarter, Binghamton appeared to be in control of the game.
Refusing to go away, Hartford scored three times in a span of 1:15
to take a 7-6 lead with 9:18 left in the third quarter. Compitello
had the final goal during that spurt. Binghamton, however,
regrouped and scored the final three goals of the period. Carlson
tied the game up with 4:47 left in the period and sophomore attack
Frank Donlon followed with a goal and assist in the final four
minutes.
Down 9-7 entering the fourth quarter, Hartford's Vinny Pellizzi
made it a one-goal game at the 12:16 mark. Six minutes of scoreless
action followed before Boyce and Carlson scored back-to-back goals
in a span of 1:06, giving the Bearcats the breathing room they
would need down the stretch.
Binghamton outshot Hartford 30-24 but lost the face off battle
13-11. The Bearcats also held a 22-20 edge in ground balls.
Senior goalie Larry Kline made nine saves, seven of which came
during the first 30 minutes.
