VMI Downs Wagner in Battle of One-Win Wonders
from press release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - Sophomore attack Will
Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) scored two goals
and added one assist but it was not enough as VMI ran past the
Seahawks 12-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action
this afternoon.
With the victory, the Keydets improved to 2-10 on the season, 1-5
in MAAC play while the Seahawks fell to 1-13 overall, 0-6 in the
conference.
The first quarter was a wild up-and-down affair that saw the teams
combined for 10 goals. When the dust settled at the conclusion of
the fast-paced quarter, the Keydets were on top 6-4 with Colin
Bosse scoring two of his game-high four goals in that opening
stanza.
The rest of the game was a much more defensive-minded affair. Each
team was only able to muster one goal apiece during the second
quarter as VMI took a 7-4 lead into halftime. A Macumber goal with
9:21 left it in the third quarter off an assist by senior
midfielder Brian Poissant (Syracuse, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) drew
the Seahawks to within 7-5. But that is as close as Wager would get
as VMI scored the next three goals in running out to a 10-5
lead.
Bosse had one assist to go along with his four-goal outing while
Brett Leonard added three goals for the Keydets. In addition to
Macumber's two goals, five different Seahawks managed single goals
- freshman attack Mike Hurley (Bellerica, MA/ Bellerica), senior
attack Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/ Comsewogue), junior
midfielder Pete Blackmer (Marcellus, NY/ Marcellus), junior
midfielder Chris Ridente (Cranford, NJ/ Cranford) and freshman
attack Mike Scheerer (West Chester, PA/ Bishop Shanahan).
Wagner held a 39-27 edge in shots, led in ground balls 28-22 and
won 11-of-21 face-offs.
Wagner is next in action on Wednesday, April 22 when the Seahawks
travel to Philadelphia to meet Saint Joseph's in a 4:00 pm
faceoff.
NOTES - Today marked Senior Day as the Seahawks honored their six
graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The six Wagner players
who were wearing the home white uniforms for the final time were
attack Michael Schaeffer (Weston, Ct/ Weston), attack Jeff
Policicchio (Novi, MI/ Novi), goalie Brandon Wascak (Frederick, MD/
Linganore), as well as midfielders Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/
Fayetteville-Manlius), Evan Shull (Port Jefferson Station, NY/
Comsewogue) and Joe Kross (Colonie, NY/ Colonie).
