Providence Hands Marist First MAAC Loss
from press release
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's
lacrosse team (6-6, 5-1) defeated Marist College (4-6, 4-1) by the
score of 9-7 on Wednesday, April 15 at the Friar Field Hockey &
Lacrosse Complex. The Friars used a 5-0 run in the second and third
quarters to give PC a five-goal lead that Marist could not
overcome. PC now owns a key tie-breaker against Marist for MAAC
Tournament seeding purposes.
Junior midfielder Jackson Fallon (Arlington, Mass.) continued his
strong play of late to pace the Friars with three points on two
goals and an assist. Fallon has posted six points in his last two
contests.
PC scored the game's first goal at the 13:36 mark of the opening
quarter on a score by Fallon off the feed from senior Danny Ryan
(Chatham, N.J.). Less than a minute later, sophomore Evan Helda
(Charlotte, N.C.) found the back of the net off an assist from
senior Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) to give Providence a 2-0
lead. The Friars completed a 3-0 run when sophomore Steve Lydon
(Braintree, Mass.) found freshman Pete Wujciak (Essex Falls, N.J.)
in front of the net for a score.
Marist responded quickly, scoring three goals in less than two
minutes to tie the score at three with 5:56 to go in the first
quarter. Bob von Hoffmann scored two of the three Marist goals
during the sequence.
The Friars regained the lead at 4-3 30 seconds into the second
quarter with junior Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.) posting his lone
goal of the day off an assist from sophomore Mike Feldberg
(Voorhees, N.J.). With 7:49 to play in the half, Marist goaltender
Ryan Penner temporarily left the goal and PC freshman Jake Nolan
(Westport, Conn.) took advantage, rifling a shot from midfield to
give the Friars the 5-3 advantage. One minute later, Danny Ryan
notched a goal for the Friars and PC took a 6-3 lead into
halftime.
Providence extended its lead to four (7-3) on a goal by Feldberg
off a pass from Fallon at the 7:37 mark of the third quarter.
Labadini added a man-up goal two minutes later to complete the 5-0
run by the Friars that put the score at 8-3.
Marist came alive in the fourth quarter, using a 3-0 run in the
first five minutes to pull within two at 8-6. However, the Friars
held the Red Foxes scoreless over the next nine minutes and Fallon
tallied an empty net goal with 46 seconds left in the game to
clinch the win for PC. Marist attackman Evan Guarini notched a goal
as time expired to make the final score 9-7.
After starting goaltender Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) allowed three
goals early in the first quarter, freshman Tim Finnegan (Lowell,
Mass.) played the remaining 50:56 minutes in the cage for PC to
earn his first career victory. Finnegan allowed only four goals
while making a career-high 10 saves for a .714 save percentage.
Ryan Penner played all 60:00 minutes in goal for the Red Foxes,
making eight saves while allowing nine goals.
The Friars posted a 35-to-28 advantage in ground balls and outshot
Marist 30-to-29. PC was 2-of-6 on man-up opportunities.
After today's contest, Providence remains at home for a 7:00 p.m.
contest against cross-town rival Brown on Saturday, April 18 at the
Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The game is part of the
lacrosse team's annual Alumni Day. The game will be preceded by the
Alumni Odd/Even game at 4:00 p.m. Admission to both events is
