Dartmouth Slips Past Yale in OT

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth men’s
lacrosse team gave up a five-goal lead in the final quarter, but
the Big Green got the overtime game-winner from senior captain
Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) to pull off the 14-13 win in Ivy League
action against Yale on Wednesday evening.
Dartmouth (4-8, 1-3 Ivy) got a team-high three goals and an assist
for four points from Koch, while junior Ari Sussman (New Haven,
Conn.) tallied two goals and two assists with one of the goals
coming with 54 seconds left in regulation to tie the game. The Big
Green also got a pair of goals from senior Jimmy Mullen (Mt.
Lebanon, Pa.), junior Towny Swiggett and junior Josh Gillam
(Peterborough, Ont.). Freshman Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.)
made nine saves for the Big Green in his third win of the
season.
Yale (4-6, 1-4 Ivy) was led by Brendan Gibson, who had a great day
with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, while
Mark Karwoski added three goals and an assist for four points.
Gregory Mahony was the game’s leading goal scorer with four
tallies for the Bulldogs. In net, Johnathan Falcone pushed aside 12
shots in the loss for the Bulldogs.
Yale built up a two-goal lead in the first six minutes of the game
with the first score of the game coming during a man-up situation.
Michael Karowski got the Bulldogs on the board, while Mark Dobrosky
followed Karowski’s goal to make it 2-0 Yale. Dartmouth
fought back as Gillam posted his third goal of the season with 4:21
remaining to cut the lead to 2-1. The Bulldogs jumped back up by
two goals as Gregory Mahony put Yale up 3-1 with 2:56 left and
Brendan Gibson gave the Bulldogs their largest lead at 4-1 at the
end of the quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Big Green as Dartmouth outscored
Yale 6-0 to take a 7-4 lead into the half. Koch got things started
with his 19th of the year just 36 seconds into the frame with the
assist going to Sussman. Mullen chipped in with his 14th of the
season with 11:41 left in the frame. Sussman knotted the score at
4-4 just over a minute later with his 10th of the year. Sophomore
Jack Steele (Longmeadow, Mass.) gave Dartmouth its first lead at
5-4 with 6:29 left in the half, while both Swiggett and junior Ian
Ferrell (Denver, Colo.) added goals to give the Big Green a 7-4
lead at the half.
Dartmouth built to its lead in the second half as Koch put the Big
Green up 8-4 with his second of the contest 1:41 into the third
quarter. Yale got back on track with back-to-back goals by Karwoski
and Gibson, with Karwoski’s tally coming during a man-up
situation. Gillam gave the Big Green more breathing room at 9-6
with his second of the game with 5:17 left in the third quarter and
his tally started a three-goal run for Dartmouth to end the frame.
Senior Philip Killian (Washington, D.C.) increased the Big
Green’s lead to 10-6 with his first tally of the year,
followed by Swiggett’s second of the game and fourth of the
season.
With the lead at 11-6, Dartmouth fell back on its heels and allowed
Yale to get back in the game. The Bulldogs outscored the Big Green
7-2 in the final quarter and Dartmouth was lucky to push the game
into overtime. Matt Gibson started the comeback with a man-up goal
26 seconds into the fourth frame and its started a five-goal run
for the Bulldogs. Colin Still cut the lead to 11-8 less than a
minute later, followed by back-to-back goals from Mahony to drop
the lead down to one at 11-10. Brendan Gibson knotted the score at
11-11 with 10:07 left in the game and brought the Bulldogs all the
way back from a five-goal deficit.
Dartmouth, however, didn’t go away as Mullen added his second
of the game to regain the lead for the Big Green at 12-11 with 7:38
remaining. Karwoski evened the score again with his third of the
game and Mahony gave Yale its first lead since the second quarter
with his fourth of the contest to make it 13-12 Bulldogs with 3:44
left in the final frame. Sussman fired back for Dartmouth with his
second score to tie the game at 13-13 with 54 seconds left.
In overtime, Koch netted his 21st of the year and third of the game
with 2:54 left in overtime to give the Big Green its first Ivy win
of the season and fourth overall. Freshman Kip Dooley (Minneapolis,
Minn.) was credited with the assist on the game-winner.
Dartmouth was outshot by Yale, 38-35, but the Big Green had 26
shots on goal to 22 for the Bulldogs. Face-offs were a problem for
Dartmouth again as the Big Green could only win 10-of-29 in the X.
Both teams were even with 15 turnovers apiece, while Yale added
three man-up goals to none by the Big Green. Dartmouth only had two
man advantage opportunities all game, while Yale had six.
The Big Green will hit the field again this coming Saturday as
Dartmouth heads south to face second-ranked Virginia at 12 p.m. on
CBS College Sports Television.
