Paar's 18 Saves Propel Stony Brook Past Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior goalie Charlie Paar made 18 saves to backstop Stony Brook to a 10-8 win over Vermont in America East men's lacrosse action at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday afternoon. Senior Andrew Kelleher (Delmar, N.Y.) scored three goals for the Catamounts, who had a late rally fall short as they dropped to 4-6 (1-1 AE) with the loss. The Seawolves improved to 5-4 (1-1 AE) with the win.

Freshman Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif.) and sophomore Liam Thomas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) both added a pair of goals for the Catamounts. Senior Alex Young (Cincinnati, Ohio) notched a goal and an assist. Freshman goalie Alex Plavner (Arnold, Md.) played the final 34:44 and made five saves.

Sophomores Kevin Crowley and Jordan McBride both had a pair of goals for the Seawolves, who improved to 8-0 all-time against the Catamounts. Stony Brook went 12 for 21 on face off and was 1 for 2 on the man advantage.

SBU took a 6-2 advantage with 4:44 left in the second quarter on a goal by junior Steven Waldeck. Plavner replaced senior Justin Lubas (Freehold, N.J.) in the cage for the Catamounts following the goal. Lubas left the game with two saves in 25:16 of work.

McBride made it 7-2 Seawolves with a man-up goal 36 seconds into the second half.

Worley and Kelleher both answered with goals for UVM to cut the deficit to 7-4 with 11:22 remaining in the third quarter.

Vermont outscored Stony Brook 4-3 the rest of the way and a goal by Thomas with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter pulled the Catamounts within two goals at 10-8. However, UVM would get no closer despite out shooting SBU 17-4 in the final quarter and 44-23 for the game.

Vermont returns to action on Tuesday at Moulton Winder Field against Holy Cross at 2 p.m.

NOTES: Freshman Tom Frasca recorded the first assist of his career ... Andrew Kelleher had a team-high six ground balls ... Kelleher has a team leading 28 goals and 34 points on the season ... His 32 ground balls also lead the team ... Kelleher has at least one point in all 10 games this season ... Geoff Worley now has 10 multi-point games on the season.
