Lafayette Has First Three-Game Win Streak Since '01
from press release
EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse program held its annual alumni day on Saturday and the team's former players and fans saw their Leopards notch their first league victory of the season with a 7-4 win over Holy Cross. The Lafayette defense gave up just four goals, matching the fewest it's allowed this season, to help give the team its third straight victory.
Kevin Dunbar led Lafayette (5-5, 1-2) with two goals. Brett Djaha chipped in a goal and an assist and Stefan Bauer led both squads with his two assists. Goalie Jeff Canfield made nine saves.
Holy Cross (1-9, 0-5) was held to just four goals despite taking 31 shots in the game. Of those 31 shots, only 13 were on goal. Colin McGeehin scored three of the Crusaders' four goals.
The first half was a low-scoring affair as the teams combined for only four goals. John Galassi scored the lone goal of the first quarter on an assist from Djaha at the 1:40 mark.
The Leopards also scored the final two goals of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead at the midway point. Kevin Dunbar scored an unassisted goal at 8:53 and Chris Ahern netted another one less than two minutes later.
Lafayette opened the second half with a goal from Djaha at 13:31. McGeehin scored his first goal two minutes later but Matt Mersky found the back of the net with 1:52 to play in the third quarter to keep Lafayette ahead by three (5-2).
The Leopards netted the first two goals of the final quarter with scores from Dunbar and Tom Perini to give Lafayette a game-high five-goal lead. Holy Cross scored the final two goals of the game--both from McGeehin--but those scores were too little too late for the Crusaders.
Lafayette's three-game win streak is its first since the 2001 season. That team finished with an overall record of 6-8.
The Leopards close out their three-game homestand next Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup against Colgate.
