Karwoski Leads Yale over Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CT - The University of Hartford lacrosse
team lost a 9-7 decision to Yale University on Tuesday afternoon at
Alumni Stadium.
Freshman Aidan Genik scored three goals to lead Hartford (0-7
overall), his third hat trick of the season. Senior Jacob Eustice
and freshman Ryan Compitello also added two goals apiece for the
Hawks while junior Justin Bearse recorded a pair of assists. Yale
(4-3 overall) was led by Michael Karwoski, who netted three goals
and added an assist.
The Bulldogs struck first when Gregory Mahony scored with 5:32
remaining in the first quarter. Karwoski then added a score with
two seconds to play in the stanza to put Yale up 2-0. Karwoski
stretched the lead to 3-0 with another goal with 11:42 to play in
the second quarter.
Hartford finally got on the board just over a minute later, as
Bearse connected with Genik for the first of his three goals. The
Hawks then scored a man-up goal by Eustice to pull within one at
3-2. Yale answered right back, however, winning a face-off and
scoring on a shot by Brian Douglass. The Bulldogs took the 4-2
advantage into the halftime intermission.
Karwoski put the Bulldogs ahead 5-2 in the opening minute of the
second half, but the Hawks answered by stringing together
consecutive goals to pull back to within one. Eustice scored on an
unassisted effort while Bearse found Genik again for another
goal.
The two teams combined to score four goals over a 90-second stretch
midway through the third quarter. After the teams traded scores,
Yale extended the lead to 8-5 on back-to-back goals by Matt Gibson
and Mahony within a 13-second span.
Following the scoring barrage, neither team found the back of the
net for the next 11 minutes. Genik finally ended the drought,
scoring his third goal of the day with 10:50 to play off a feed
from classmate Carter Bender. The goal closed the deficit to 8-6,
though Gibson scored his second goal of the day with 6:48 remaining
to give the Bulldogs a three-goal buffer once again. Compitello
netted Hartford's final goal with 2:30 to go, though Yale
controlled possession in the final minutes to run the clock
down.
Yale outshot Hartford 34-30 and held a 32-26 edge in ground balls.
Goalie Jonathan Falcone made 12 saves for the Bulldogs in the
victory. Freshman Aidan Genik made nine saves in goal for the
Hawks.
Hartford will next open America East play at Vermont on Saturday,
March 28 at 2 p.m.
