Drexel Pulls Away from Lafayette Late
from press release
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Drexel scored three-straight goals in the
third quarter to break a 6-6 tie and defeated Lafayette, 11-9, at
Vidas Field. Joe Wojciechowski scored what proved to be the game
winner just 31 seconds after Lafayette evened the score for the
first time in the game. With the win the Dragons improved to 3-4,
while the Leopards dropped to 2-5.
Wojciechowski gave the Dragons the lead and the momentum back with
a nifty drive towards the goal from the side of the cage. He beat
Lafayette goalkeeper Jeff Canfield to put Drexel up 7-6. Less than
two minutes later, Greg Casey fed Brian Neary, who fired a shot
past the keeper to make it 8-6. Kevin Stockel added another goal in
the final two minutes of the third before Lafayette's Tom Perini
got the Leopards back on the board with just four seconds remaining
in the third period.
The teams alternated goals twice in the final period. Lafayette cut
the lead to 11-9 with 2:43 to play, but was unable to get any
closer as the Dragons' offense held the ball for a little more than
a minute before losing possession. Drexel goalkeeper Mark Manos
made five of his 14 saves in the final quarter to help preserve the
win.
The Dragons opened up a 4-0 lead and held the Leopards off the
board until the early stages of the second quarter. Ron Garling
opened the scoring for the Dragons a little more than halfway
through the opening period. Colin Ambler added a pair of goals and
assisted on Kevin Stockel's goal with just under two minutes left
in the opening period.
Ambler led the offensive attack with three goals and two assists.
Garling and Stockel each had a pair of goals for the Dragons and
Casey added two assists. Perini had four goals for the Leopards.
Stefan Bauer had two assists and three points. Canfield turned
aside 10 shots for Lafayette.
Drexel returns to the field on Tuesday night. The Dragons travel
west to face Denver in a non-conference game. Drexel returns home
on Saturday to begin its Colonial Athletic Association schedule
against Towson.
