POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Trailing 6-4 with 1:22 to
go in Saturday's game, the Marist men's lacrosse team got goals
from Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and Ryan Sharkey (West Field,
N.J.) in the last minute of regulation to tie the game at 6-6 and
force overtime against Canisius. Zindel then put in the
game-winning goal with 1:53 to go in overtime to give Marist a 7-6
win in both teams' MAAC Lacrosse League opener at Tenney Stadium at
Leonidoff Field. Zindel finished the game with five goals to lead
all scorers.
Canisius (0-4, 0-1 MAAC) dominated the first quarter, getting on
the board with 9:43 left in the period on a Simon Giourmetakis
goal. Giourmetakis scored again off of a dodge to the cage at the
3:53 mark to put the Golden Griffins ahead 2-0. Marist only
mustered one shot from Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in
the first quarter, getting outshot 8-1. Both teams took seven shots
in the second quarter with neither team finding the back of the
net. Marist goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made three
saves in the quarter as Canisius' Bryan Jack had two saves to keep
the lead 2-0 for the Golden Griffins going into halftime.
After being shutout in the first half, Marist (1-2, 1-0 MAAC) got
on the board first in the second half. Zindel scored on a dodge
from behind the net with 12:43 to go in the third quarter to make
the score 2-1. After Canisius' Mark Leonard was called for
slashing, Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) won the ensuing face-off to
give Marist possession for its man-up offense. Zindel scored with
12:07 to go in the third to tie the game at 2-2. Canisius responded
with three straight goals from Adam Jones to take a 5-2 lead with
6:59 to go in the third quarter. Zindel scored his third goal of
the game with 6:15 left in the quarter to get Marist within two,
5-3.
Marist got to within one goal of the Golden Griffins, 5-4, at the
6:48 mark of the fourth quarter when Matt Teichmann (Huntington,
N.Y.) set up Evan Guarini (Long Valley, N.J.) for his first career
goal. Canisius had an opportunity to extend the lead to two with
5:25 to go on a Teichmann penalty but the Marist man-down unit
successfully killed off the penalty. The Golden Griffins, however,
did get the lead up to two with 1:22 to go when Jones scored his
fourth goal of the game to put Canisius ahead 6-4. Francis won the
face-off for Marist and Zindel scored his fourth goal with 54
seconds remaining to make the score 6-5.
Canisius won the face-off following Zindel's goal and had a chance
to run out the clock. Marist had other plans. Francis knocked the
ball away from the Jones and picked up the ground ball to give
Marist a clearing opportunity. The Red Foxes successfully cleared
the ball with Guarini getting the ball to Sharkey for the
game-tying goal with nine seconds remaining in the fourth
quarter.
Marist won the face-off to start overtime and never gave up the
ball. The Red Foxes got three shots from Santavicca and Teichmann
before Zindel found the back of the net for the fifth time in the
game at the 1:53 mark of overtime to give Marist the 7-6 win.
The Red Foxes outshot Canisius 32-31 for the game, taking eight
more shots than the Golden Griffins in the second half. Marist also
held a 37-33 advantage in ground balls with Francis leading the way
with five ground balls. Sharkey, Nick Armstrong (Kings Park, N.Y.),
and Keegan Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) each had four ground balls.
