Burke Leads Brown Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior midfielder Reade
Seligmann scored three goals, including the go-ahead goal late in
the third quarter, to lift Brown to its third straight win, 9-8,
over #13 UMass in a thrilling New England lacrosse battle at Garber
Field. Brown All-American senior goalie Jordan Burke made 20 saves,
with two saves in the last 27 seconds, including one in the final
seconds, to preserve the victory for the Bears.
The win lifts the Bears to 4-1 overall, while UMass falls to 3-3 on
the season.
With the score tied, 6-6, late in the third quarter, Seligmann
netted back-to-back goals to give the Bears an 8-6 advantage early
in the fourth quarter. UMass narrowed the Bears lead to 8-7
on a goal by Ryan Hantverk with 11:59 left in the quarter.
Brown freshman Rob Schlesinger scored what proved to be the
game-winning goal by registering an unassisted goal with 10:14
remaining in the game. Tim Balise scored 45 seconds later for UMass
to pull to within one goal of the Bears, 9-8, but the Bears held
off the Minutemen for the victory.
The Bears held a 2-1 lead after one quarter following goals by
senior Jack Walsh and junior Thomas Muldoon.
The Minutemen tied the game early in the second quarter, but Brown
scored three straight goals Seligmann, Schlesinger and Walsh, his
second of the game, to go ahead by a 5-3 margin with 5:16 left in
the second quarter. Jim Connelly scored for the Minutemen with 4:36
left on the half to cut Browns halftime lead to 5-3.
UMass opened the second half scoring with a goal by Rory Pedrick,
but senior Kyle Hollingsworth answered to give the Bears a 6-4
advantage on a man-down situation. Goals by Connelly, and Bobby
Hayes tied the game, 6-6, for the Minutemen late in the
quarter.
Walsh and Schlesinger finished with two goals each, while
Hollingsworth added two assists to go with his one goal. Muldoon
registered a point (1 goal, 1 assist) in his 25th straight game,
the sixth best active streak in the country.
Both goalies were sensational, with Burke making 12 of his 20 saves
in the first half, and Doc Schneider making 14 saves for the
Minutemen.
Brown opens defense of its Ivy League Championship next Saturday,
March 21, traveling to Hanover, New Hampshire to battle Dartmouth.
