Penn State Upends No. 20 Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. - No. 20 Villanova (4-1) suffered their first loss of the 2009 season to Penn State (2-3) Tuesday, falling 10-8. After being behind early, the Wildcats were unable to generate enough offense to complete their comeback.

Allowing two quick goals to the Nittnay Lions in the first five minutes, Villanova received a goal from sophomore Mike Brennan (Manhasset, N.Y.) to put them on the board. With a score from Penn State to answer, the Wildcats struck again on a goal from freshman CJ Small (San Diego, Calif.).

Penn State opened the second quarter with two goals extending their lead to four. To bring the Wildcat back within two, senior Tim Driscoll (Montville, N.J.) and junior Paul Webber (Manhasset, N.Y.) were able to get the ball in the net. Webber finished the day with a goal and three assists for Villanova while Driscoll continues to lead the Wildcats with 11 goals on the season.

Down 4-8 in the third quarter, senior Matthew Fritts scored with 9:57 remaining. The goal brings Fritts' season total to eight, second on the team.

With the score 6-9, senior Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.) recorded a goal with 0:56 seconds left in the third keeping the Wildcats alive. MacDonald notched a goal and three assists in the contest.

To bring the score to within two in the final quarter, the seniors Tim Langan (Madison, N.J.) and Driscoll each recorded a goal.

Senior Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) recorded fives saves in the game for the Wildcats. DiLoreto now has 40 saves in five games this season.


Leading the day for the Nittnay Lions was Jack Forster who had two goals and two assists for Penn State. On the defensive side, goalkeeper Drew Adams tallied 16 saves in the contest.

The Wildcats we be back in action Saturday March 14th when the take on Lehigh. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
