Robert Morris Wins Fourth Straight

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Robert Morris University Colonials
overwhelmed first-year program Detroit Mercy in an 18-8 win on
Sunday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium to increase their winning
streak to four games. Robert Morris maintained a solid lead
throughout the entire game with the closest score coming at 12-7 in
the third period.
In the win sophomores Rob Marasti (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon)
and Corbyn Tao-Brambleby (Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve
Academy) led the way with four goals apiece, with Tao-Brambleby
also adding an assist for a game-high five points. Senior Brandon
Johnson (Finksburg, Md. / Westminster) and sophomore Trevor Moore
(Port Coquitlam, B.C. / Western Reserve Academy) also scored
multiple goals in the win, with Johnson adding three and Moore
grabbing a pair. Freshman Kiel Matisz (Stoney Creek, Ontario /
Saltfleet) dished out a team high three helpers, while freshman
Dave Morton (Orangeville, Ontario / Hill School - Pa.) and junior
Patrick Smith (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) each collected two.
Five more Colonials tallied points in the win.
The Titans were led by Matt Gregson and Scott Harris who both came
off the bench and notched two goals apiece for Detroit. Kevin
Demorest finished with a team-high three assists.
The Colonials waited three minutes from the first face-off to make
the first score, but never looked back as they quickly accumulated
five unanswered goals in the first quarter. Senior Aaron Bottazzo
(Rochester, N.Y. / Irondequoit) scored the Colonials first goal of
the game, which started the five-goal string.
With 18 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter, Detroit was
finally able to get a mark on the scoreboard when Vince Wigdahl
found his way past RMU goalie Sal Barcia (West Islip, N.Y. / West
Islip). However, in the final 10 seconds of action, Tao-Brambleby
and Smith were both able to connect to head into the second quarter
with a demanding 7-1 lead.
Detroit opened up the second quarter with a goal at 1:04, which was
followed by five RMU goals, giving them their biggest lead of the
game at 12-2. Within the last five seconds of the game Detroit
scored its third goal to bring the score to 12-3 at the end of the
half.
The Titans came back on the field for the third quarter fired up,
scoring four straight goals. However, Robert Morris had an answer
for every single one, with Jordon Sealock (Airdrie, Alberta /
George MacDougal) and Dan Kerch (Chesterfield, Mo. / DeSmet)
netting goals and Tao-Brambleby breaking through the Titan defense
to score back-to-back goals.
The final quarter saw the fewest goals scored in the entire game,
as Detroit struck the net once early in the quarter and Robert
Morris tallied two goals in the final three minutes of regulation.
Moore finalized the score 18-8 with a goal with one second left on
the clock.
A total of 22 penalties were called in the game, with Detroit being
called for the majority of the infractions. Robert Morris
capitalized on six-of-14 extra-man opportunities, while also
scoring a man-down goal. Detroit was able to utilize two-of-six
man-up advantages.
Robert Morris dominated the face-off circle going 18-for-28 with
five different players representing. T.J. Sarnese (Horsham, Pa. /
Hatboro-Horsham) and Keith Lee (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve
Academy) tallied the most success, going seven-for-nine and
eight-for-eleven, respectively.
After three quarters Barcia racked up nine saves, while freshman
goalie Dillon Pope (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) notched five
in just nine minutes of action.
The Colonials return to Joe Walton Stadium for its fifth straight
home game to take on VMI at 1:00 p.m. Robert Morris is an even 2-2
against the Keydets in the all-time series.
