Twelve Score as Sacred Heart Beats Wagner

from press release

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men’s lacrosse team got goals from 12 different Pioneers on their way to an 18-3 win over visiting Wagner College Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The Pioneers out shot the Seahawks 39-28 on the way to their second-straight win.

After the two teams exchanged goals in the game’s first three minutes, the Pioneer offense outscored Wagner 7-1 over the rest of the first half and 13-1 into the fourth quarter to take command. Freshman Dennis Gannon (Huntington, NY) opened the scoring at 14:06 as seven different Pioneers scored in the first half for an 8-2 lead at the break.

After Wagner (1-5) freshman Mike Hurley made it 1-1 at the 12:14 mark of the first quarter, SHU’s Evan Morgan (Ashburn, VA) got the Pioneers started on a 6-0 run. Junior Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) tacked on his team leading 10th goal off a feed from fellow junior Stephen Gerhard (Littleton, CO). Also scoring on the march was senior captain Bobby Rushton (West Islip, NY), who notched a pair, along with sophomore Tim Russo (Lindenhurst, NY) and junior Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY).

Hurly ended the Pioneers run with his second of the first half off a feed from Evan Shull but the momentum was short lived as Sacred Heart tacked one on just before the half as senior Dan Casciano (Syracuse, NY) buried a feed from junior Brendan Foley (Hicksville, NY) with just 25 ticks left for an 8-2 lead at the break.

The Pioneers (2-4) left no doubt to start the third quarter, building on Casciano’s marker with five-straight into the fourth for a commanding 14-2 lead. Russo picked up his second to open the quarter followed by unassisted tallies from Casciano, Gerhard, freshman Matt Ferrino (Orchard Park, NY) and sophomore Myles Rich (Huntington, CT). Hurly produced Wagner’s final goal of the day scoring his third at 13:44 of the fourth from John Hird.

SHU closed out the scoring with four-straight as sophomore Jake Aaron (Brooklyn, CT) scored a pair along with Ferrino’s second and junior Vincent Castelli’s (Woodbury, NY) first of the season.

Junior Zack Frank (Islip Terrace, NY) played into the third quarter making 11 saves in picking up the win in goal. Senior Zach Smith (Chittenden, VT) won 12 of 18 face-offs on the day picking up a team-best nine ground balls.

Sacred Heart will remain at home to open the Colonial Athletic Association schedule next Saturday, March 28th playing host to the Hofstra Pride.
