Streep, Bucknell Stun No. 12 Navy
from staff reports
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman middie Charlie
Streep (New Canaan, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) scored a spectacular
diving goal as time expired, lifting the Bison to a wild 8-7
victory over 12th-ranked Navy before 1,015 fans at Christy
Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen
accounted for half of Bucknell's goals in the game, while senior
Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) backstopped a
strong defensive effort with 13 saves as Bucknell assumed the early
lead in the Patriot League standings.
Bucknell (1-2, 1-0 Patriot League), which was coming off a pair of
close losses to nationally ranked Duke and Ohio State, led 7-3
after three quarters, but Navy (2-2, 0-1) stormed back with four
straight goals and tied the game at 7-all on Joe Lennon's goal with
1:30 remaining.
Bison sophomore Jake Clarke (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) finally
picked up the ground ball on the ensuing faceoff after a 19-second
battle for the loose ball. He drew a pushing penalty near the
sideline with 1:11 remaining. Bucknell did not score on the
extra-man opportunity, but kept possession and played for a late
shot.
Two shots skipped wide, and after a timeout, Streep took possession
deep in the right corner with five seconds remaining. With Navy
short-stick defensive midfielder Geoff Leone - a Preseason First
Team All-American - defending him, Streep gained inside position
and scored with a diving shot from close range just as the clock
hit 0:00.
The goal was Streep's second of the day, while fellow rookies Nick
Gantsoudes (Redding, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and Billy Eisenreich
(Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored their first career goals. Junior
attackman Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) handed out a
career-high three assists, while junior Austin Winter (Boonton
Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) had two assists.
After Navy's Joe Lennon and Bucknell's Joe Mele (Westbury,
N.Y./Kellenburg Memorial) traded goals to open the game, Ryan
Klipstein (Califon, N.J./Rutgers Prep) put the Bison ahead for the
first time with a highlight-reel behind-the-back shot into the
upper left corner of the net.
Brendan Connors, who had two goals and two assists for Navy, scored
with 14 seconds left in the first quarter to tie it at 2-2, but
Bucknell outscored the Midshipmen 4-1 in the second quarter to go
up 6-3 at the half. Mike Danylyshyn (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport)
scored his first of the season on an EMO to put Bucknell up 3-2.
Gantsoudes made it 4-2 off a Brandau feed, then after Patrick Moran
scored with a man up for Navy, Klipstein and Streep tallied in the
final four minutes to put the Bison up by four.
Eisenreich's 15-yard shot off a pass from Brandau at the 4:51 mark
of the third period made it a 7-3 game, but the tide turned in the
fourth quarter. Bucknell struggled with ball possession down the
stretch, turning it over seven times in the fourth quarter. Navy
capitalized, as Andy Warner's goal with 12:28 started the comeback
march.
Connors scored off a nice feed from Tim Paul, then Paul scored
himself with Connors returning the favor on the assist with 7:25
left to bring Navy within 7-6.
A big play for the Bison came after the Paul goal, when all-star
defenseman Billy Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) went off on a
slashing penalty at the same time. But Clarke won the faceoff and
the Bison drained the entire penalty time.
The Mids thought they had tied with 5:50 left when Moran finished a
great thread-the-needle pass from Paul, but Moran was in the crease
and the goal was waved off. They finally did pull even after
freshman goalie RJ Wickham made a save on Danylyshyn with 2:47
left. Navy cleared, and Connors found Lennon open on the right wing
for the tying goal with 90 seconds remaining. That set the stage
for Streep's buzzer-beating heroics.
Sciubba was strong all day for the Bison, finishing with a
season-high 13 saves just one game after being removed in the first
half against Ohio State. Wickham, who was making his collegiate
debut, finished with six saves.
Navy outshot Bucknell 27-26 and won the ground ball battle 32-23.
The Midshipmen won 12 of the 18 faceoffs, but the Bison won three
of five in the fourth quarter.
The Bison snapped a three-game losing streak to Navy, including a
4-3 overtime loss in Annapolis last season. Navy now leads the
all-time series 5-3.
