Dalgarno Lifts OSU in OT Over Bucknell

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior captain Joel
Dalgarno scored in overtime to lift the Ohio State men’s
lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over Bucknell in a back-and-forth
game Saturday in Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Bucknell had rallied
to tie the game with 40 seconds remaining but Dalgarno’s
third goal of the game gave the Buckeyes the win.
The victory, Ohio State’s first in five tries vs. Bucknell,
moves the Buckeyes to 2-1 this year. The Bison fall to 0-2.
Dalgarno, who moves into second place alone in the Ohio State
record books with 180 career points, and sophomore Mario
Ventiquattro each had a hat trick and two assists for five points
vs. Bucknell, with senior Jeff Ryan chipping in three goals and a
helper. Buckeye sophomore goalie Brandon Freeman had 10 saves in
the game, including three in the fourth quarter.
In the overtime, freshman Stephen Tepsick won the opening faceoff
to give the Buckeyes possession. After a Buckeye shot was blocked
Bucknell got to the ball but an interference call gave the Buckeyes
the ball back. After a timeout Ohio State controlled play and
junior James Green found Dalgarno at the side of the net and he
converted from a sharp angle for the win.
Bucknell jumped out early to start the game, scoring twice in seven
seconds at 12:11 and 12:04 of the first quarter, with Charlie
Streep and Austin Winter providing the goals. The Buckeyes then
went on a six-goal run, including five goals in the first quarter,
to take a 6-2 lead. Ryan scored back-to-back 17 seconds apart at
7:40 and 7:23 to tie the game at two. Ventiquattro assisted on the
first goal, with freshman Keenan Ochwat picking up his first career
point with the assist on the fast-break goal by Ryan. Freshman
Brock Sorensen found Ventiquattro for a man-up goal at 5:39 to put
Ohio State ahead for the first time. Dalgarno and Ventiquattro
scored back-to-back unassisted goals 1:01 apart at 3:21 and 2:10,
respectively, to give Ohio State a 5-2 lead at the end of the first
quarter.
Dalgarno scored off an assist from Ventiquattro at the 13:16 mark
of the second quarter, marking the lone Buckeyes goal of the
stanza. The Bison scored three times in the final 5:03 of the half
to cut the Buckeye lead to one going into halftime. Ohio State kept
the Bison off the board for 22:01 until Streep scored his second
goal of the game at 5:03. Ryan Klipstein followed with a goal at
3:30 and Winter scored off an assist from Joe Mele at 1:50.
The Bison tied the game at 11:16 of the third quarter on Tim
Brandau’s goal. The teams traded goals twice before the
quarter was out to enter the fourth tied at 8. Ryan set up
Ventiquattro for a goal at 8:42 to put Ohio State ahead but
Klipstein tied it at 6:05. Senior Brian Lalley scored on a Dalgarno
assist at 5:23, putting Ohio State on top, 8-7. Brandau scored with
just 41 seconds remaining in the quarter to tie the game for the
third time.
There was no scoring in the fourth until Ryan converted from in
close off a Dalgarno pass at 6:58. With time winding down the Ohio
State defense was able to get a stop and cleared the ball up field.
A Buckeye turnover gave the ball back to the Bison and Bucknell was
able to convert coming out of a timeout, as Streep scored his third
of the game with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. Bucknell
outshot the Buckeyes in the quarter, 12-5.
In overtime, Tepsick won the opening draw. Ohio State had three
shots, with one blocked and one wide, before Dalgarno’s
winner. Bucknell was unable to get a shot off in overtime.
For the game, Ohio State was outshot, 38-31. Freeman had 10 saves
while playing 62:38 in the Buckeye net. Bucknell starter Nick
Sciubba played the first 12:40 and gave up five goals on six shots.
Matt Antonelli took the loss, allowing five goals and making six
stops.
Ohio State was 1-for-6 on man-up chances in the game. Bucknell was
0-for-3, including a Buckeye stop down two men late in the third
quarter.
Freeman had a team-high five groundballs in the game. Senior
defenseman Scott Matthews was second with four and Tepsick, who won
4-of-9 faceoffs, had three.
Postgame Notes
The Buckeyes continue their homestand when they host Fairfield
Saturday at noon. The game is scheduled to be played outdoors at
Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium but could be moved indoors in the case
of inclement weather. If the game is moved inside the Woody Hayes
Athletic Center seating is limited and fans are encouraged to
pre-purchase tickets to secure a spot.
Dalgarno took over second in the Buckeye record book with 180
career points. He is tied for third in goals with 103 and fifth in
assists with 77. He has a team-best 10 goals and 14 points this
year.
Ventiquattro had his fourth career hat trick and first since April
12, 2008 vs. North Carolina. The five points were a career high
after three career four-point outings. He has five goals, three
assists and eight points this year.
