Penn Holds Off Drexel 9-8
from press release
PHILADELPHIA – Penn scored the first four
goals of the game and held off Drexel, 9-8, in men’s lacrosse
action at Vidas Field. The Quakers led by three with just under 10
minutes to play before Drexel made a comeback that fell just
short.
The Dragons (0-2) trailed 9-6 with 9:47 to play after Penn’s
(1-0) Joe Kelly scored an unassisted goal. Drexel began its
comeback less than two minutes later when Dana Wilbur picked off an
errant pass by Penn goalkeeper Greg Murray just past midfield.
Wilbur fed Colin Ambler, who broke in down the right side and
scored in the vacated net. The Dragons made it a one goal game with
2:57 left when Ambler took a pass from Scott Perri on the man-up to
make it 9-8. Penn won the face-off and retained possession until
the final minute. Drexel finally got the ball, but one of the
Dragons went offside, giving the Quakers the ball, and Penn ran out
the clock and came away with the victory.
Penn led after one period, 3-0 and added another goal in the first
minute of the second quarter when Alex Weber scored an unassisted
goal. The Dragons scored the next three goals, capped by a Perri
unassisted goal with 2:16 left, and the teams went to intermission
with Penn ahead, 4-3. The Quakers, who never trailed in the game,
scored the first two goal of the second half. Al Kohart put home
his second of the game and Craig Andrzejewski followed with his
only goal of the game less than two minutes later.
Kohart, Weber and Garvey Heiderman each finished with a pair of
goals for the Quakers, who won their season-opener. Perri, Ambler
and freshman Kyle Bergman each had two for the Dragons. Greg Murray
made 11 saves for the Quakers. Freshman Mark Manos, starting his
second collegiate game, made 12 saves in a losing cause for the
Dragons.
Penn outshot the Dragons 37-29 and won the face-off battle, 12-9.
The Quakers won eight of the last nine draws in the game.
Penn’s Joe Kelly picked up six ground balls to lead all
players. Drexel All-American candidate Matt McCormick had five
ground balls.
Drexel is off until next Saturday when Binghamton comes to Vidas
Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
