Yeatman Leads Terps Past Air Force
from press release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The game was secondary to
the cause it was raising funds for, but the No. 3 University of
Maryland men’s lacrosse team won the Wounded Warrior
Project’s “Face Off for a Cause” with a 15-4
victory over Air Force Saturday afternoon at the University of
North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
Junior Will Yeatman paced the Terps with six points on a pair of
goals and four assists. In all, eight Terps had multiple-point
games, including sophomore Ryan Young, who tallied his first-career
hat trick.
The game started well for the Terps, with Young scoring the
game’s first goal off an assist by Grant Catalino. But Air
Force showed its spirit and responded to knot the score at a goal
apiece on an unassisted tally by Eric Evans. That’s the way
the game stayed until the final two minutes of the first quarter.
Finally, sophomore midfielder Danny Burns was able to find the back
of the net for his first career goal.
That was the start of a 4-0 Maryland run that saw Bryn Holmes, Jake
Bernhardt, an Orlando, Fla., native who scored twice in front of
his home-state fans, and Burns again, score to give the Terps a 5-1
lead.
Air Force’s Wick Kelly scored just 11 seconds after
Burns’ second goal to trim the lead to 5-2, but that was as
close as the Falcons would get. Maryland ripped off the next eight
goals to put the game out of reach.
Young tallied two goals during the run, one unassisted and the
other coming off another Catalino assist. Bernhardt, Jeremy
Sieverts, Yeatman, Joe Cummings, Catalino and Brian Farrell all had
one goal during the scoring spurt. Yeatman also had three assists
during the Terps’ scoring barrage.
The Falcons’ K.J. Landgraf stopped the run at 12:16 in the
fourth quarter, making the score 13-3 in favor of the Terrapins.
Sieverts and Yeatman scored back-to-back goals to finish the
scoring for Maryland, while Evans tacked on the final goal for Air
Force at 1:45 in the fourth.
Holmes had another stellar effort at the face-off X, winning
11-of-13 draws.
Defensively, the Terrapins were led by their starting close defense
of Farrell, who had three groundballs and two caused turnovers and
Mike Griswold and Max Schmidt, who each had two caused turnovers
and one groundball.
The goalie tandem of Brian Phipps and Jason Carter was tremendous
for the Terps. Phipps made seven stops, while Carter came up with
six saves.
Maryland makes its home debut next Saturday, Feb. 21, when it hosts
local rival Georgetown. The Terps and the No. 8 Hoyas are set for a
1 p.m. start at Ludwig Field. The game will also be televised
nationally on ESPNU.
